..."The hard thing about hard things is that they are hard" - You just got to get to it sometimes...

This one is great. It reminds me of a helper who, covered in fiberglass grinding dust and with sweat pouring out of him in the summer heat, looked up and said: "This isn't easy!" I, also covered in fiberglass grinding dust and with sweat pouring out of me, answered: "If this was easy the owner (of the boat) would just do it himself." :)

“If you want to know what a mans like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals”- Sirius Black (Harry Potter)

“I would rather entertain and hope that people learned something than educate people and hope they were entertained”-Walt Disney

My favorite lines, I put them on my signature line at work.

When in a buffalo/cow chip throwing match, don't pick a fresh one. Also wash hands before lunch and don't rub your eyes.

-From a real estate tycoon I was friends with, in regards to trespassing on soon-to-be auctioned vacant properties "Act like you are supposed to be there, and nobody will bother you". I have found this to be true in many cases. Just do whatever you have to do, right out in the open, and people won't give it a second look. If you tip-toe around and keep looking over your shoulder, people will be suspicious of you...

This is something a few buddies and I discussed while doing stage hand work a few years ago. If you want to get into any show at any venue, put on a black shirt that says STAFF on the back, make a badge, carry a clipboard and walk with authority through a dock or backstage entrance. Nobody will notice or say a thing.

To stay on topic, a cool old black man, who was a regular at one of my retail jobs in college, told me years ago "Every day is a good day. It's just some are better than others."

Then, there's the classic "***, gas, or grass- nobody rides for free."

The best advice I received from my dad was "Quit your crying you ain't dead yet".

My brother, me, and my dad were in a traffic accident that nearly killed my dad when I was in third grade in the 70's. The old man heard me crying in the back of the ambulance and comforted me as only he could. He grew up in the depression and saw combat in the Pacific in WW2. That gave him an interesting take on overcoming hard times.

This was popular when jimmy carter was running for president around 1977

“Jimmy Carter is my shepherd, I shall not want"

5000 years ago Moses said “pack up your camel, pick up your shovel, move your *** and I will lead you into the Promised land”

4500 years later F.D.R. said “ Lay down your shovel, sit on your *** and light up a camel, this is the promised land”

This year Jimmy Carter will take your shovel, sell your camel, kick your *** and tell you he gave away the promised land.”

If you'd spent half of much time doing the job you were supposed to do, as you spent trying to get out of it, you would have been done by now. - among one of my Dad's favorite phrases.

This rings so true - I thought this (all on me own) when I served in the CG...watching some people work so hard finding ways NOT to work.

My sig line on a hunting/firearms forum is a quote from a fellow member:

"...most of us would be better off losing half a pound around the waist than half a pound on our rifle."

got one that's not one sentence, but a quick short story... i'm sure some of you have heard it. I went to Maryland to visit my aunt and uncle, and i can't remember what me and my uncle were doing, but i poked fun at him for being "old" (i was 18, a month after graduation) and said the line about old dogs and new tricks... he said

"Let me tell you something... There is an old buck and a young buck on top of a hill. The young buck looks down at a bunch of does and says 'Hey! let's run down there real fast and screw one of them does!'. The old buck grins and says 'Or, we could WALK down there, and screw them all"

I can't wait until the situation comes when my son needs to hear that.

“If there is one thing I’ve learned in my years on this planet, it’s that the happiest and most fulfilled people I’ve known are those who devoted themselves to something bigger and more profound than merely their own self interest.”
