Best All In One Tool Set

I needed a tool set in my truck so I stuck a craftsman top box in it and filled it up. It got me thinking towards the summer when I take the car out on cruise nites. Typically I raid my toolbox of some extras and put them in the car for the summer. I'd rather have one plastic box full of what I need to be solely for the car.

I want a full socket, wrench, plier, screwdriver set. Blue Point has a great offering (BLPGSSCT71) and may be the most complete set I have seen. Matco has the silver eagle line, but they don't come as complete as the blue point.

What else is out there that I am missing. I want good quality and want it complete in its own case. I want to avoid piecing it together.

It would be helpful if you have something to sell too :)

A friend of mine had a Matco set he was looking to get rid of. I don't think it was ever used, just sits around at his house. I can ask if he's still got it if you are interested.

Get a pic or model number. I would like to find something soon once I determine what's out there and what will best suit me....thank you for checking.

I've got the Williams version of that BP set that I bought on eBay a long time ago for cheap ($50 maybe?, things used to be cheaper a few years back). It's OK, Taiwanese I think. It's missing a few things that a car set might need (real screwdrivers, hammer, prying thing) plus you end up carrying SAE when you need metric or visa versa.

I really think that the best answer is to buy a large tool roll and fill it up with things you know you need...it'll fit better in the trunk or behind the seat and not bang around.

I just asked him and he said he traded it back to the Matco guy a few months ago...

I was thinking of piecing something together but when I saw what you get in that compact case that blue point has I thought that was my answer. I just wasn't sure if there were others out there I don't know of. This case is going in '71 Vette. Once the t-tops go in the back all that will fit is a slim blue point type case...ATC..thanks for checking.

Hang on, the one I've got is Blue Point (I have another Williams one that's different, I tend to pick this stuff up if it's cheap enough) and it's roughly 15x17x4.5" in size. Like I said, no real screwdriver, no hammer, no flashlight, no pry bar, no battery terminal cleaner, but lots of extra tools you might not need (metric).

Edit: I'll tell you what those plastic case sets really really need (like a lot of power tool cases need) is a clump of interior space that you can put more stuff into...basically a rectangle of empty storage.

I have been looking on ebay...nothing has what the blue point set has. A lot come close like Williams, craftsman, and channellock. But these sets don't have pliers and screwdrivers. Mostly sockets, wrenches, and a bit driver if you are lucky. As you mention they would work if they had a tiny bit of room to add the few things they are missing.

This is just for the summer in the Vette. I have plenty of extra stuff to use but can't get it together small enough like blue point did. I don't have much storage so a slim case would be awesome.

I would love to find something under $150 other than Chinese junk.

i dont know how easy it would be to get in the states but what about this http://www.carolus.de/en/products/article_details.html?pm_id=150836&oe_opt[list_set]=150840,150836,150839
or http://www.gedoretools.co.uk/tool-a...0-tool-case-touring-47-pcs-4010886660072.html

and swap out the metric for imperial or keep a socket rail aswell
most the european brands sell something similiar so one might do an imperial set

That's close. More sockets and wrenches would make it perfect. The case is perfect for what I need. I still keep coming back to blue point. I am watching one on ebay that ends in a couple of days which is perfect.

That one you are looking at doesn't have a screwdriver and doesn't really have a bit driver. It has a 3/8" spinner handle and then a 3/8" to bit converter piece.

Just a heads up.

Another possibility for a container might be one of those Platt cases with tool pallets.

I've always thought these Heyco sets were cool. No doubt they are metric only. Crummy hinges, though.

...there are also lots of possibilities if two cases are acceptable.

The first one could be Wiha, there's lots of variations of this that they sell:

combined with one of the umpteen cased 3/8" socket sets.

I could work around the screw drivers...I just like the bulky stuff in one slim case. Things like pliers, wrenches, and sockets all in a self contained small unit is handy. The group I usually drive with typically has one incident per trip of a parking lot fix. I currently have a baby wipe box that fits in one of the back compartments, but it really limits me. A slim box set would fit perfectly under the t tops....wiha is nice, but a little pricey and not complete for my needs. Dam bluepoint keeps looking the best. I found the one on ebay I will try for. Not much used on Craigslist in my area. I texted my snap on guy while he is on vacation and he said they rarely come up used. If they do he gives them to family for their cars.....go figure.

Bahco is nice, but all metric and very pricey.

It ain't slim or especially small. Mine is fine for dragging around the house, but I definitely would go to a soft case (and a lot smaller) for a car. Those BP and Williams sets rattle a fair amount and, as alluded to, don't have anywhere for the other half dozen items that make sense (flashlight, hammer, real screwdriver or two, etc.).

It sounds like you are sold on the Blue Point system, so good luck with the auction.

The Bahco stuff is the same sets as BP/Williams I think and they come up on eBay also. They aren't a bit more expensive than the BP ones, which also retail at a zillion dollars. Most of the fancy-cool sets tend to be metric, so that leaves out 80% of the possibilities. There is a Williams variant that's SAE only that has screwdrivers, but no pliers.

Go to Walmart or a sporting goods store and pick up a cheap hard plastic pistol case. Small and compact, and the foam padding will keep the tools in place and from ratteling. Or pull the foam out for a little more room. They make the cases in nearly every size possible

I'm not the one needing a case, but those plastic pistol cases aren't really very good.

It does seem kind of stupid how most power tool cases have hardly any spare space (you'd think a drill would have a bunch of room for bits, etc.. for example).

I'm probably the King of Tool Cases, I should run a thread on that kind of thing. The blow mold Blue Point/Williams are, as usual for plastic of that type, kind of sizeable. The tin boxes that come with Euro tools are nice and have a better mounting system inside. I kind of wish that I'd bought one of those Nepros cased sets back when they were 1/2 price, but it's too late for that now. It would be just the thing for an old Datsun.

So I decided to go with the Bluepoint set. I had to bid and win it off ebay. Then had to wait for delivery, but I finally got it. It's Blue Point BLBGSSCT71. It's hardly used, but I did get bid up some and paid $200 for it including shipping.

The set itself is the most complete one I could find. Sae sockets 5/16-1" and mm 10-24. Wrenches sae 1/4-3/4 and mm 10-19. It has a ratchet, 3extensions, (2) spark plug sockets (5/8 and13/16), a bit driver with flat, Phillips, and allens. It has an adjustable wrench, diagonal cutter, needle nose, and channel lock type. Only thing missing is a hammer which is easy enough for me to store seperately in the car.

Here is what I take when I go to the junk yard and usually keep it in the back of the truck. The only thing I really want to add to it is a set of socket adapters.

^^^^^i love the bulk storage in that case to add what you want. How old is that? I never saw that set in all my searching.

I bought the case at sears about 2 years ago. As I upgraded my "tool box" tools I put my older craftsman stuff in the case. The case was $24.99. Each time I use it and realize I wish I had ..."fill in the blank" I try and add it for the next trip. It really holds a ton of stuff. And the way the socket storage is laid out you can do a quick inventory to make sure you aren't missing anything.

So you bought just the case. That would have worked as well. It is nicely laid out and would have been perfect. I was at sears looking at the craftsman sets, but the bigger ones came in large boxes that were more vertical than flat. Never saw the empty cases unfortunately.

I got a 90 pc Craftsman (Way pre-Asian outsource...) metric set (sockets, ratchets and 1 combo wrench set) with most of the opposite side with the cavity available for storage as a fathers day present maybe 12 years ago or so.

I've added the drivers, pliers and a second set of combo wrenches, as well as a few other things. it's my road box for long trips and hunting/camping trips. I actually used it to make an engine swap in my 4X4 rig, (not a R&R, a swap...) just to be sure it had everything needed. i.e. Snap ring pliers, etc...)

So look carefully, the "empty" side did have the wrenches in snap in slots, but plenty of room for additions.

Works great, but ain't light (anymore)

Younger daughter gave me an "all in one" set by Crescent a couple of years ago from Costco. I used that puppy to pull the engine out of a VW van, repair a couple of outboard motors, all kinds of stuff. After a couple of years of fairly heavy use the plastic case hinges went to heck, so I bought a real tool box, sewed up some tool rolls from canvas and still have the set in my truck.

Set included 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 drives in metric and imperial, moderate size metric and imperial wrenches, screwdrivers and similar, feeler gauge set, 12V circuit tester.....

Costco still sells them and I can attest, they can take a beatin'!

I bought a Stanley set at Walmart a few years ago, had 3/8 standard and metric sockets and some pliers and wrenches in a metal hand case with a few drawers. One of the drawers was empty so you could add on, much more thoughtful than the standard plastic case offerings. Wound up ordering a bunch of them for car club use, tossed the standard sockets and wrenches and added some German-oriented things to each. Made for a nice kit that dues paid for.

this covers almost anything.
Just not usa, but half bluepoint isnt either. Got one in my jeep. Never know when you need some of this stuff.

How big is that set, dimensionally? I was thinking of maybe the HF 301-piece set... which is about the most comprehensive tool set I've ever seen in a single case, but it is pretty bulky. Also, I can't find any photos online of the gearwrench set opened up. Do the sockets stay put or end up all over like most blow-molded cases?

This would live in my truck box so I don't have to pilfer out of my big box all the time and wonder where stuff went.
