I have a #175 Cane Corso and a #60 Pit mix and I lock my doors so I won't have to clean up gallons of blood and limbs if I get broken into.

Seriously, any alarm is a good alarm. Burglars will ditch the minute that the siren goes off. Don't advertise the system like sone idiots do with the yard signs. That just tells them what they are up against.

You have really asked two questions: best, most cost effective.

Just like with tools, you can go nuts and spend crazy amounts.
But, given your second question (cost effective) I am guessing you want to protect your home without spending a fortune.

If you are out in the boonies, I don't know that a camera system is worth the cost. I installed a wireless system from X10 on a previous residence and was impressed with how well it worked for the money.

You want a system that both calls the cops and sounds an alarm. The one I had would call up to three numbers, and it could tell if I answered the cell phone or if it went to voice mail. If it went to voice mail, then it called the second number and so on.

I don't believe I spent over $200. In conjunction, I also put up a few dummy security cameras. Crooks can't tell a real one from a fake one, and will normally just move on. They aren't in that business because they are industrious. They are looking for an easy score.

Hope this helps.

I would think if you were out in the sticks what is the eta for the cops to show up? Good locks and documented insurance is your best deal with the dog

I think that's a new record for someone to bring up guns and dogs in a security system discussion.

This website was just mentioned in another current thread on this subject: http://simplisafe.com/ You may want to use the search function at the top of the page, this comes up pretty often.

I live in the country and went with Vivint. Not sure if they area available in Georgia. We like it mostly because of the fire alarms, but also because we can check if we locked the doors before we left. Eventually when the kids get older we will add the camera system.

Well, thanks! I've got the bad *** pit mix and a rifle and a handgun so I feel better already. I just want to be double sure. I will check the threads and the Vivint and simplysafe and everything else ya'll mentioned.
