Best Beginner's Mapp or Propane Torch Kit

Hello,

I am looking to get a torch for the first time for occasional use bending steel (1/4" plate max), removing stuck bolts, and I would like to learn to sweat copper in the future for air lines. First question is, Mapp or Propane? The second question is what is a good beginners set? I see setups with rigid torches threaded onto the bottles as well as setups that use hoses for more flexibility.

Mapp... Rigid with a quick light system. IE a trigger.

Do your self a favor and get the MAPP gas set up. Go to a plumbing supply house and get a turbo torch. I am not sure there is a self lighting unit but I have a striker I use and spare flints. I use it to sweat pipe mostly and propane makes it into a chore. MAPP gas rules.

I have a mag-torch for general burning uses (not a trade specific use like brazing or anything)

Seems decent. Pleasantly surprised by the braided hose.

I hate MAPP Gas torch setups. you'll burn through a small bottle of oxygen in ten minutes doing any serious cutting. It's nothing compared to an oxy accetylene setup. I guess there good for small applications, or if you don't need to use it all that often, but not for daily use in a shop.

I have an older one like this. I use it for sweating pipe and small heating projects when dragging out the big stuff out doesn't work for me.

If you are needing a "gas axe" set up then Oxy/Acetylene is the way to go. 200 or 300 size bottles for a shop. Rose bud for heating things is great and boarders on melting stuff out an badly rusted hardware.

I have the same thing, use it with propane and mapp.

buddy works at a plumbing warehouse and got it cheap for me. Short of getting it cheap I've never used it for anything plumbing related. I light fires, fireworks, and such

You might want to go with Mapp gas if i remember correctly mapp burns hotter than propane. I use to work at a weld supply business for quite a few years sold more mapp than we did propane for that reason.

And that Victor Turbo torch is the way to go I sold a lot of those also.

I have a propane/MAPP hand torch. Use MAPP. More expensive, but worth the cost.

I have been contemplating buying a new outfit because I want one with a hose. The hand torches I have used go out when tipped too far.

The Turbo Torch Extreme PL-3T Deluxe Kit looks nice. Can be used as a hand torch, but comes with adapter and 12' hose.

i have a few different torchs. a cheapie from home depot, benzomatic brand that works very well, as well as 2-3 turbo torch set ups like the above, and i have a benzomatic torch with a hose that i love, it lets me get into tighter spots better, and when heating things its easier to just hold the hose rather than the whole bottle assembly.

now that i see they make self lighting ones with a flow control i want one.
