One end covered with 24"x24" steel plate and the vise mounted there. Doing it again, I'd seriously consider doubling up 3/4" ply and then the hardwood flooring as someone mentioned earlier. My old bench was doubled up 3/4" ply and masonite on top. The masonite chipped and gouged pretty easily.
