Best budget paint

Ended up buying Sherwin Williams SureScrub in satin for $22/gal (contractor price). The quart of black for the stripe was $20. 5gal bucket of Kilz PVA front Home Depot was only $40. Ready to go!

Turned out good. I went a little higher on the stripe to meet the middle of the outlets where my workbench will go.

I am going to say something that may cause me to look like jerk, but please understand, I don't mean it that way.

Whenever I paint something I use really good paint, I don't even consider "budget paint". The way I look at painting, and most things for that matter, is that I would rather spend $100 to get something done and have it look really good rather than spend $50 and have it look bad. If I get the job done and it looks bad then I tend to do it over again, the right way, and I end up spending more money on the project than I would have spent if I had just done it right the first time.

Anyway, right or wrong, my thinking on the subject is to forget about cost and just do the job right the first time. It will look really nice, you will be glad you did it, and you will most likely save money in the long term. That is my thinking for what it is worth.

Looks like the Sheetrock first coat primer is only $10 more for a 5 gal bucket than the Kilz PVA. Not a big difference. Both sound good.

Edit: Actually looks like it is more. Sheetrock is $50 for 5 gal, covering up to 1000 sq ft. Kilz PVA is $40 for 5 gal covering up to 2000 sq ft.

I realize that you already have it done now, but when I read that, I did laugh out loud.
In priming 2830 sq ft, I used 15 gal of quality primer from Tru Value. That new drywall really ***** it up!

It was perfect for me. Only used about 4 gal primer and covered my 1400 sq ft.

Just remember that there is nothing more expensive then cheap paint.

Thanks. The post was going to be too obtrusive to frame over, so I left it alone. I think I will paint it the same three colors. Same plan for the wood around the garage door, but will wait til its warmer, so I can leave the door open for a while.

IMO would have been better for the stripe to fully capture the outlets -- using black outlets/covers.

But, again it's a garage. Why the horizontal outlet above

The outlets there are intentionally very high, so I didn't want to extend the stripe up there. I made the stripe higher than planned already. The horizontal outlets will be directly under where cabinets are mounted (almost hidden), for workbench lighting.

The horizontal above the light switches is a recessed outlet for a security system panel, so no power cords are visible.

I may end up putting pegboard overall those outlets, so the stripe may be moot anyway.

Here in Tempe AZ you can go to the local hazmat collection center. They mix the recycled paints into a beige or gray. It is free to residents. Got 25 gal for free last time I painted my house.
