Thank you everyone for the advice on the coat. I'm gonna go check them out next week, and I will most likely be getting the extreme arctic Carhartt coat. Just haven't decided to go with hood or no hood, but I'll probably go with the hood.

Now for bibs and shoes, what do ya'll think of the links I posted for those?

I would do a lot of reviews of the boots you posted, the newer ones with glued on soles tend to come apart fairly quick.

I take it you will be working in Lemont or close by, I've known a few people that used to work on barges over there.

What size boots you wear? I have some Redwing steel toe (maybe composite) that are made in U.S.A and just a bit to small for me and would let them go for about $100 (new about $250), they are insulated and decent shape, I bought them off a friend that works for the railroad and he wore them for about 3-4 months, they can be resoled, but soles still in good shape. They say size 11 but I wear a 10.5 new balance shoe and these are about a 1/2 size to small, so more like a 10.

Let me know, I'm not very far from you and can send some pics.

I've always wear a Carrhart with a attached hood, they hold up very well, I was at bass pro in Bolingbrook not long ago and they have some made in U.S.A made ones.

For boots, I wear a size 11 or 12, depends on the company from what I've seen. I'm really liking the Pittsburgh Keen boots though. The reviews are good and they seem to last. They look comfortable too.

Cleaning and prepping barges??? Don't know what that in tells. If your going to be doing welding or cutting metal or in places that will cut or tear your clothing look at Carhart. If your going to outside not doing tasks that eat clothing look at Gore-tex. I have a hunting coat and bids that I will put against any work wear for warmth. The material is abrasion and cut resistant but they are expensive. They cut wind out. Lets your sweat evaporate and it will leave your clothing and not make you cold from sweat. Light and very comfortable. Also waterproof. I have been in the Utah mountains with strong wind and heavy snow and was very comfortable all day.
Good stuff but expensive.

I wont be welding, not for a long while anyway. Just pretty much has to stand up against the wind, rain, cold and snow. This has been the longest most miserable winter the Chicagoland has seen in quite sometime. I just want to be prepared.

Having spent a winter working outdoors in North Dakota...

There was a Carhartt I tried on that had knit cuffs inside the regular straight sleeves that felt warm. Need to have something over the back of your neck too, even if it's a hoodie (thick polyester fuzz preferred).

The cleaning and prepping barges sounds wet. For the boots, maybe Muck boots with steel toes (if such a thing is made). There are many steel toe rubber boots just below knee length that you can get. Most much cheaper than Mucks, since Mucks are the Polo of all-weather work boots. Like Carhartt is the Polo of work clothes.

I keep seeing some say that do NOT get the arctic one but to get the flannel lining or "duck active" one. Simply because they say the arctic one is too hot to work in.

Depending on HOW HARD you are working. It is possible to OVER dress in the cold, then you sweat and get COLD if you are not wearing the CORRECT underlayers.

That is definitely a concern of mine. That's why I'm thinking of not going with the arctic lined.

I am not sure which one I have but I love it. Super durable and more than enough warmth.
I will never own another work jacket.

EVER.

I wouldn't buy a cathartt jacket, Duluth trading makes a much better jacket and it is a lot softer.

My cathartt artic bibs are nice but they are older and higher quality than the new stuff.

My Dickies FR clothes have been really good for the price. Half the price of cathartt and they last just as long.

Hey K-Dog. Is there anyway you could look at the tag and let me know which one you have? I'd appreciate it big time!

Alrighty everyone. Now I'm looking for a pair of good work gloves. Preferably waterproof, warm but can give you a good grip.

Update guys!

I bought a duck active Carhartt with a hood. I'm loving it. I also bought a Wolverine Durant Steel Toes. They are comfy but durable. Now I need a durable pair of work gloves. Thinking of Mechanix Wear originals.

I have the first one, the c26 model. I was a surveyor for 27 years, working outside in Indiana winters, and this coat was the best one i ever wore. Real quality.

So guys, I'm looking for a good pair of work gloves. Here's some things I need from the gloves.

They need to have a good grip. Be warm. And not be too bulky.

I pulled my artic bibs out this winter. I like the Carhart stuff, worth the extra money. The only thing I change is I like the Walmart hood way better, they have a better design around the neck.
