In the coming years I'm looking to build a very basic 24x24' standalone garage in my backyard just for car and tool storage. I'm looking for the ultimate DIY thread or guide but info seems to be hard to find in one place.
Perhaps you might want to lay out what you will be doing in the garage. If you really are only using it for car and tool storage nothing else there is not much to it standard outlets on 3 walls lights and done. Most of the shops mine included yeah are in the garage but they support more then just tool storage / car parking. So no real direction can be given to threads or a book/blog etc.
You should also consider you local building codes too. You'll definitely need permits and you may have to have inspections done during the process. And some places require licensed pros to do the work. 20+ years ago, my first home did not have a garage and we decided to build a 24x32 garage. It didn't take long to figure out that unless we called in every past favor, getting it framed in was impossible to do in a reasonable amount of time for the two of us. We just worked with a guy to get it framed in and shingled. Took us probably a good year to finish it.
Take plenty of time to educate yourself and have fun. Be prepared for some frustrating moments, so just remember the goal
See if you can find a builder to work with on weekends/vacation time. Tell them you want to work for free to learn how to build. And find some books to read. I have a Black and Decker guide to wiring that I pull out once in a while, not the end all reference but pretty good for something like a garage.
What I find is that I want to DIY and don't have the full knowledge, I spend a lot of time studying threads, forums, asking coworkers who have experience, etc. Eventually enough becomes clear that I can proceed.
It would be helpful to have a set of plans, any plans, really, to study.
