If you are looking for the best hand held rotary tool out there, as mentioned the foredom is about as good as it gets. However they are only good if you plan on doing your work at a bench. They have a hanging motor and a rotating shaft that really needs mounted.

For around the house stuff and using cut off wheels and burrs and what not. A dremel is fine. I have two foredoms and a dremel and have no issues using the dremel on around the house stuff. I just used mine to make up for my lack of skill coping some trim. It would have been impractical to use the foredom.

I have the cordless 12v Dremel 8220 and use it to cut off inner bearing races from wheel hubs. I wanted something smaller than the 3 inch cutoff tool and the Dremel works great with the correct wheel.

I saw a Dremel 4300 in Home Depot the other day. It's a big departure from the Dremels I have. Corded, 2A power IIRC, 3-jaw chuck, quite large body, $99 for a kit with accessories.

The chuck or collets are easily interchanged. The spindle is hollow with an outside thread. You can either screw on a chuck or stick the collet of your choice into the spindle and screw on the collet closer. For standard sizes like 3/32 and 1/8 bits, I prefer the collets. I think they hold better and run truer. Swapping back and forth takes no time at all.
