If you use an auger make sure to get a really strong drill.
For years the Milwaukee hole hawg was the drill of choice in my area with a long (18"ish) 1" ship auger bit, I imagine there are cordless options available now.

I've always had good luck with 3/4-1" augers bits,I definitely reccomend a good 18-20v cordless drill in a lower gear.
And hang on tight.:spit:
I've got a set of those dare devil bits also, they actually work really good for spade bits.
They wont plow through nails like the auger/self feed bits though.

I bought one of these: it works great, I put a 6" auger bit in it.

impacted rated agur bits ...

more specific these Ridgid ones but they discontinued it... so you'll have to get something similar... bored in 3" thick lumber no problem at all.

so any of the bosche / milwaukee will be my choice after these bits are done.

the ridgid set I have look like these. fits 1/4 impact... I used it with my craftsman impact drivers.. works fine... as long as you DON"T pre-drill on these self feeding bits...

Unless you have a gigantic garage, no need to get fancy with all kinds of super duty drills and exotic bits. I used my regular old 3/8" corded drill and a cheap spade bit when I wired mine; it didn't take that long and wasn't that hard.

A decent quality auger bit will make the job go smooth, a spade bit is almost as archaic as a brace & bit. Milwaukee Self Feed bits for larger holes, but their newer bits have replaceable blades which work good since finding anyone who can sharpen the older ones is getting harder and harder.

I have to sharpen all mine. I wired 2 really old houses recently. It's slightly different than new, I use them all but also have a couple 3/4 and 7/8 twist drill which work well and can be sharpened. Lathe mud is really bad. Next job I am buying couple new augers. I like a stubby too that let's the drill between joists. Also really could use a right angle on occasion, my bud had a hole hawg I use but for some reason never got one.

Bosh daredevil spade I have drilled millions of holes in wood these are hard to beat.

These are great. I have a Hole Hawg, but lent it to my nephew who's an electrician apprentice and needed if for a small project.

In the mean time, I had to drill some studs for 1/2" PEX. 7/8" Daredevil works well with Dewalt 20V 1/2 drill. Cuts like butter. Also have a Ridgid right angle attachment for the multi-tool. Works great. Not heavy duty, but for the DIY, it's great.

Hole hawg with auger bits for production drilling, but it is heavy. Daredevil for light to medium use with cordless drill.
