I currently have a motive power extractor that I've used with pretty good results for changing oil (though it's a bit messy to empty). I have a friend that would like to get an oil extractor for home use. See a lot of folks that have mighty-vac.

What would be y'alls recommendation for an oil extractor for the home mechanic?

BTW, mine is a hand pump one - would it be better/easier to run off my air compressor?

The Mityvac MV7201 worked well for me while changing the oil in a MB E350. It has a large capacity reservoir and a hand pump so I wouldn't have to rely on compressed air.

The best cheap extractor I have seen is a 5 gallon plastic bucket with vinyl tubing through the lid for the suction tube. Apply vacuum with a Harbor Freight air-powered vacuum (venturi-style) "pump" using your shop air compressor. You can get a better seal by using a "tank bulkhead fitting" and hose *******, since this has an o-ring seal against the lid surface. Be sure to extend the suction hose down into the bucket near the bottom.

I made a smaller one of these using a heavy plastic water bottle. I use it for pressure bleeding brakes by hooking it up to the bleeder fitting at the wheel and pressurizing it with a bicycle pump. It would probably work just as well using vacuum and pulling the fluid from the reservoir.
