I have a 2 Story existing post and beam structure 22' X 12' (bunk house. ) I would like to Add a 22 X 16 addition with plumbing, using poured slab. What would be the best Footing method to bridge the two? In Minnesota, frost footing need to be 48". My thought is to dig down 48" by 18" all along the existing wall that will bridge the two sections and lay up a 48" deep wall for the entire 22' . Suggestions????

You refer to post and beam but that's really refers to the framing method of the super structure rather than the foundation, which is the important bit for your question. I suspect what you have is a pole structure where the posts are imbedded in the soil? Does it have a slab or a wood floor system?

The key to adding on to an existing building is minimizing differential movement. If you have a pole structure, I suspect you have a fair amount of movement even if the posts extend to the frost line. An addition on a traditional frost wall and slab on grade will have far less movement, which could present problems.

I'd be reaching out to a structural engineer. Honestly, I'd hire an architect for the addition and they should be working with a structural engineer for the addition.

Welcome to the Forum, I personally don't have either the knowledge or experience to say more than to say check with your local authority having jurisdiction in these matters.

My local building permit issuing office makes very real effort to keep those of us who want to be our own DIY stuff out of trouble..
