here is a recent discussion on it with a few brands noted:

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=235486&page=2

I checked some of mine, here's what I got:

Snap-on ............shallow
C-man ..............1/2 way and some 3/4 of the way down
SK....................shallow
Herbrand...........shallow
Thorsen.............shallow
Proto................shallow
Husky...............shallow
Duro-Chrome.....shallow
Blackhawk.........shallow
Hazet...............shallow
Mac Impact.......1/2 way

These are all deep sockets and are old ones not newer than the last 10 years.

I believe all the new Napa Carlyle stuff is broached all the way to the bottom. And they have a extensive selection of sockets. It is Taiwan, not USA made.

I love my shallow broached Snap-on's. I rarely have to have a fully broached sockets and keep some random Craftsman sockets around for the rare occasion I need one. Sensors and stuff like that.

I like the Pittsburg from harbor freight. Only broke one working on heavy equipment. Lifetime warranty on them

Above certain sizes, Wright deeps are full broach. Looking at their current catalog, 18mm and deeper are full broach, smaller sizes are a shallow broach, but still are about a 1/3rd of the length of the socket. I must have a fluke 11mm socket, because it is full broach, whereas the 10 and 12mm in the drawer next to it have the shallower broach.

Thanks for the tip, I will be checking out NAPA. Drive by there twice every work day.

Any tips for not paying the asking price at NAPA? Carlyle seems kind of high for taiwan.

Some stuff listed on eBay pretty cheap. Selection is limited, but priced well.

I've heard people with "company/corporate accounts" get a good discount. Know anyone that does a lot of business with Napa that will make the purchase for you?
