If you go with the portable forced air style buy hearing protection. I have a few and they are loud.

You may want to put a couple of ceiling fans to circulate the hot air that accumulates near your ceiling.

Id say the best one has vented combustion with a heat-exchanger to ditch all of that moisture.

Even better than that, separated combustion where it draws fresh combustion air from outside via its own input tube.

I use a Rinnai in Maine for a 24x30 well insulated shop. Outside air supply (required by insurance). It's very efficient, but cost a little more up front. It's quiet, and will bring the shop up to temp in about 20 minutes on a day like today (27*). I placed the unit next to my bench, which is where I like it warmest.

I've got a Bigg Maxx 75k in my metal building. 24x40 with 1.5" insulation with osb on the walls, and 6" batts in the ceiling with osb. Works nicely for me.

Location might help get better responses. That will give a better better idea of the temperature variance that you might want.

Also, is your garage insulated? How good if it is? Is it sealed up pretty good? Are you looking to use a trash can style propane heater or a permanently installed one? From my own experience using a portable one, will put a huge amount of moisture into the garage.

Honestly I’m so glad that i found this forum after using a little mobile propane setup for a couple of winters and hating the noise and condensation on all my tools and walls. Like 58yeoman i went with a bigg max but mine is the 50k size. My garage is a lot smaller then his and even though it was a lot of work to install 50ft of iron gas line and hang the unit myself as well as put in the hvac it was all worth it. My shop goes from 30 to 68 now In hardly no time (probably 15min) and the unit doesn’t drive me crazy with noise and doesn’t cycle a ton to keep the temps comfortable.

Phil: Why did you mount your Big Maxx upside down? Just to get the inlet gas connection closer to the ceiling?

I have a 80k Big Maxx and a 45k Big Maxx. Love them both. Doubt they are the best on the market but they probably are the best value on the market.

I just put a Goodman 80K with an AC coil for future needs in my 30x40 here in CT. Quiet and efficient...

in the car wash, we used Reznor…imagine this…it is 15* With a 140’ long tunnel with water flying everywhere ..they kept the tunnel running, not frozen and operations were fine. Once it drops below 15*, it paid to close up

I’d use a Rinnai EX-38. Yes it is a bit undersized but it has a programmable stat built in so you can get it running before you enter. As a rookie, with the exception of running the gas line you can vent, set and trim this thing out in about 3 hours. It helps when offering advice if we know where you are. Miami or Minot?

I'm seeing some pretty large spaces heated successfully with small'ish units. Are most of your shops insulated? Also, are any of you starting from cold and dark, or do most have it running at idle to stay just above freezing off-demand?

If insulated, you need less BTU to heat up and maintain. If starting from 50 instead of 0, you need even less. When I had a large unheated shop with no insulation, I used a big kerosene torpedo, that was 150 or 200k. When I downsized to a smaller shop, I used a smaller propane torpedo that was 100 or 120k. I liked the torpedoes for the forced hot air to warm up the work area faster. After I insulated, I used a variable BTU propane torpedo that was also a quieter model and would turn down the BTU once warm, like 30 to 60k. Now I have an insulated attached shop and heat full time to 60 plus with a natural gas hanging shop heater that is 50k though 25 would be fine (I did not know initially whether I would heat full time or as needed).

I like being able to go there comfortably any time. I have AC that I run in summer. Took me years to get to this point in life, but I like it. Maybe I spend another $1000 or even $2000 per year on heat and electricity — I don’t know for sure and am fortunate to be able to afford to do so.
