Best large wrench set

I’m looking for options for a large combination wrench set covering 1 1/16-1 1/2. I prefer to buy American as much as I can, but wouldn’t be opposed to import just because of cost. I’m a truck mechanic so the wrenches will be used fairly often for mostly suspension work. I have a mix of a few large size Chinese right now and am looking for a complete set preferably in a roll that I can throw in the pickup for road calls. Anyone know of anything?

Thanks in advance.

I think with big wrenches cheap is ok. Theres more metal on the open ends so it's hard for the ends to spread because they are so big. Also you'll save money with import and maybe have enough left over to buy some large angle wrenches. I have some large tekton wrenches that look really nice considering the price.

Sunex are decent, I also had some Northern tool branded wrenches that are ok. I do prefer the Williams superrench's I got off ebay to either. They're lighter/less bulky, which was nice for hydraulic lines.

Proto is what I use. Can usually be found used at a good price otherwise a lot of the tech's at my shop use Sunnex. Personally I don't use them that much, usually i grab a crowsfoot and a service wrench.

I have the SK and like them. They aren't cheap at $424 before shipping. https://www.harryepstein.com/index.php/wrenches-combo-stand-full-polish-29001.html
I've been interested in Wright's wrenches at that size, but I don't think that Wright has a set for that range. I may be wrong. I have Wright wrenches in smaller sizes and prefer the all canvas rolls. The plastic on the SK rolls seems to have given way in shipping since it arrived that way to me from Harry Epstein's. That is my one gripe about that set.

I bought a set of SK large metric combination wrenches several years ago (20mm ->32mm, IIRC), when I was restoring an old FJ-40. Quite happy with their quality, but that was when all SK was USA made. It may be different today since their buyout, etc.

If you don't mind buying used I would build a set of vintage Williams Superrench. They're all over Ebay and easy to find. I put a set of 1-2'' together and I don't think I paid more than $200 for them. They're very nice wrenches.

I have both the SK wrenches and the Klutch wrenches in those sizes. Not much difference between the two as far as work goes. The SK wrenches are shinier.

Once you get that large, it would be rare to break one no matter who made it.

sunex was hit or miss, had 30mm wrench that it will not fit on open end. had to grind down slightly.

i would go with proto or wright.

Try Ebay for used Snap-On. A few scratches won't matter. Also, you might consider 4-way wrenches too.

SK has a topper set from 1 1/16" to 1 1/2". Still USA as all current SK tools are. Wright are nice, but switch to a very beefy beam design at 1 5/16" that you may find overkill or just not like that the big wrenches don't match the smaller.

My large wrench set is a mix of Armstrong, Williams, Wright, Craftsman, and more.

The Williams Superwrenches are by far my favorite but they all get the job done. I also have one satin chrome Northern Tool wrench and assuming that style/pattern is still available I'd buy a whole set if matched tools were important to me. It's an exceptional value compared to most of the US wrenches and the fit & finish is very good.

If you are patient there's a good chance you can find what you need on ebay. In particular pawn shops seem to sell their slow moving stuff on there. I'm partial to Wright, and have had good success, especially in fractional for unused or very lightly used tools.

Just as an example, earlier this year I bought a clearly unused #714 satin fractional set 3/8-1-1/4" for $132 shipped. Not the size range you're looking for but typical of the kind of deal you can get.

I went to ebay when I wanted to fill out my wrenches up to 36 mm. Got a great deal on some used Easco combos that where military surplus. Each one had a UIC number engraved on them.
