I know there's a lot posted here regarding LED shop lights, but the tech is also rapidly changing, rebates are availible and in general prices are lower.

What is the best "deal" in 48" lights right now?

I'd like to to be under $50 per fixture

I still like my FEIT 4 foot twin tube LED shop lights from Costco. Best ever sale price was $25. Now they are a bit more. Specs easily found on line.

A little history on "shop lights"....
Fluorescent lamp manufacturers, long ago, started making a very cheap, inferior grade, shortened lifespan flourescent lamp that would run on a standard ballast. Since it had reduced lumens and short life, it wasn't very useful for typical commercial applications. All it was really good for was task lighting, ie: mounted over work areas, under cabinets, etc. The thinking was that these task lights wouldn't be on all day like the overhead lights. They would only be on a couple of hours each day. This justified the short life-span and lower lumen levels. This lamp was a hit in work shops and so they quickly acquired the nickname "shop lights".
Shop lights were certainly the cheapest, most inferior grade, worst performing lamps that you could find. But they were cheap. And the lamp manufacturers made no apologies for making them because they felt that they filled a niche market.
Today, "shop lights" are still the lowest quality, most inferior grade product that the manufacturers make. And they're still not really intended to be used light up entire shops, although many folks have had success doing just that.
Just remember that if you are googling "shop lights", you'll likely not get a chance to see any lighting fixtures of good quality. That might be OK for you in your own garage and I dont mean to put anybody's choices down. It certainly wouldn't fly in any commercial lighting project.
Good luck in whatever choice you make.

I had 5 of these Lithonia LBL's installed in my 3 car garage yesterday.

Not the cheapest at $110/ea. but I hope they are good quality. They are very effective. I gave my electrician the option of buying some other brands from his commercial supplier but he said these looked good after having a low opinion of some of the other brands the Home Depot stocked.

The best price on the Costco lights was $19.99when purchased on line with free shipping or at the stores with often regional power company instant rebates.

Many of us are waiting for the twin Pack saleto return ???

cyberdyke is absolutely right saying that the shop lights are not intended to be used as general lighting on every day for many hours. I'm sure the reason mine are still satisfactory to me is that they are only on for an hour or 2 once or twice a week.

Thanks for the correction.
I neve saw that price but since I only needed 5 for my 10x20 space, getting the absolute lowest price wasn't vitally important.

I bought 5 of the Feits from Costco last summer and have been wowed by them. Zero lag on a cold startup all winter. My wife came in one night and commented on how bright they are. With the old T-12's I did not have the pull switches. I have used these a few times to cut the light during the day so I don't have it quite so bright inside or that I am not lighting the top of the open door.

I don't know about the "instant rebate" but that is what I paid. Good product, great price.

The jury is still out on how long the "bottom grade" LED-tube fixtures are going to last. They seem nice out of the box and I've been impressed so far.

I recall the ballasts failing in HD lights within about 3 years of very sporadic use and a new ballast from same store was more expensive than the entire fixture was initially so I get the "price point" issues....

I think the best hedge for now is going to be:

- wire with ceiling outlets instead of hardwire
- don't depend on the "linkability" of individual fixtures, instead wire a single outlet per fixture (two fixtures per duplex)
- especially if doing new construction where the ceiling is open. With existing, must always make the smartest decision without expending a load of cash and the above could get into that depending on the size and finish of the facility.

At least with this if something fails or a better option comes available in 5 years, its a couple of screw-type anchors and a plug, minimal destruction to ceiling drywall or metal.

Rather than buy new fixtures, I bought LED "bulbs" that replace my existing T8 48" tubes. I got the kind that run on 120vAC, and removed the ballast from my old fixtures.

If the LEDs fail, I can swap in new ones.
Somethin like this

I've been very happy with them. The only downside that I can see is that my fixtures now run line voltage, and when I sell the house I'll remove them - because somebody could put a regular T8 or T12 in the fixture and have a problem.

I need some help guys...I'm building a house and need 4' LED shop lights and I'm having a terrible time trying to find something to fit the bill.

The garage is ~750sqft, 3-car. I want surface/flush mounted, so the Sam's/Costco are out. I'm also trying to keep it relatively cheap, I see quite a few options at $100+/light.

Anyone try these out?

https://www.1000bulbs.com/product/171319/LEDF-ELYWL301C.html

3,400 lumens, 4k, 40watt, 80 CRI and have steel silver covers which look nice.

The Lithonia are significantly more expensive, but are really the only other option I'm seeing. 4,000 lumens, 4k, 64watt, 82 CRI.

Actually, the tech isn't rapidly changing anymore. Sure there are small gains in efficiency, but if you're waiting for cheaper prices, it's not going to happen unless someone is unloading 2 year old overstock. I assume when you say "shop light" you're referring to the typical hanging plug-in pull-chain work bench task light (that cybrdyke thoroughly detailed) and not a 4ft 2-lamp hard wired surface mounted strip fixture.

Either way, expect future fixture and lamp prices to go up from all sources.

Seems to me that the best deal on shop lights are the t8 replacement LED "bulbs" in regular fixtures. They're cheap, bright, efficient, and reliable (because you can replace any given bulb any time you want instead of the whole fixture).

Those are still throw away's and over twice the price . Real test will be how long any of them last . Not sure how true it is but I was told the leds themselves can last forever . It's the power source that goes . I was changing all my fixtures anyway . They were 17 years old and starting to humm ( also cheapo $15 fluorescent fixtures bulbs included ). Bulbs didn't seem to last either . So for this price I thought I'd give the led's a try .

I just got in 10 of the Costco Feit LED lights for $39.99 for 2 plus $5 shipping. it was an online sale. Beat the store price by $5 a pair. I have had 16 of them hanging for over 3 years now with no failures.
