Ok,

I have the costco one for a while and saved my **** a few times past 3 years.... Today when I needed it, it just died and As luck have it, I am "at" costco when this happens... No they probably won't warranty that. But I was able to buy a new battery and go home.

Now comes to the question is

NOCO GB70 any good or there are better ones ?

Looking for something that won't die from sitting in the car for a while without charging.

I have the largest portable NOCO, a GB150. Havent found anything it can't start yet. Its fantastic. They all need to be recharged somewhat often. My NOCO manual states once a month for peak power.

Noco is over priced and no more reliable than alot of other lesser known brands.

Any of the jumpers on amazon with thousands of reviews should serve you pretty well.

Noco GB-40 is the best seller on Amazon with 28K reviews and 4.7*. Rated at 1000A (and no way you'll see that on those clamps). It's $76 right now. That's overpriced? I'm sure there's plenty cheaper, but what's better rated at that $?
And I own this. With the battery disconnected, alternator disabled, it'll start my 2.7L tacoma on a 35F morning after it sitting in the truck all nite. Yes, just barely starts it, but it does it. And did it a second time. And then took about an hour to fully charge via USB so it didn't use much of the capacity. I'm sure there is a cheaper product, but ....

I was literally just watching this video earlier today, shows good comparison between different jump starters at different price points:

Its overpriced relative to its competitors, not relative to function.

Whatever you were willing to spend on the Noco, you can apply to another brand and get x1.5-x2 more power.

The Gooloo's are nice units.

This was round one a year ago:

Thanks for the link... so its down to 3 brand... all relatively the same price. Just don't want to get stranded again. Good thing I was at costco and able to get the battery. Bad thing, it was the costco brand battery jump starter that was not working, sort of taunting ...

I think those 3 are pretty impressive. GB70, Tactlife, and GooLoo...

Not sure which you you have?, I have the older Costco Type S, since around that time also 2015/2016 or 17.... don't remember. It was great the few times I needed it. Just today. Not sure if it was the freezing cold, or it was just sitting there too long after one use.... It was not even powering on when I got it home, Now it's fully charged about 3 hours later on usb-c 15Watt charger. Not sure if I can still trust it.

Anyways....

am i the only one not sold on Li-ion jumpers yet?

in all the ones i've seen, the jumper wires are comically thin (high gauge), but i appreciate that they're short in length at least.

also, even though the self-discharge of Li-ion itself is not too different from lead acid, it sounds like people have to maintain them regularly (monthly?). i definitely don't charge my lead-acid thing every month. i think there must be appreciable parasitic drain on these Li-ion units from the electronics. do they have (heavy duty) physical disconnects? guessing not.

my jump n carry is super low tech. no parasitic losses. there's no disconnect. the leads are always hot. also, the clamps and leads are beefy. only downside is it's heavy/bulky.

that said, i have a Li-ion battery in my dirt bike. no parasitic drain there, though.
i leave it for the entire winter out in the cold without charging, and it's good to go in the spring :)

I own two jump n carrys and they are bout 7+ years old with no issues. As pizza mentioned, they are bulky and heavy.
I also own a NOCO and I love it for it's size and it can jump my V10 E350 without hesitation and do it multiple times. They are a bit pricy but I got mine brand new for $50 on FB marketplace.

I also own a cheapo amazon one. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FFW9ZLN/?tag=atomicindus08-20

I think it was like $60 and it has done just fine as well. It struggles starting V8s but it does the job.

As far as charging goes. My Jump n carry takes 24-30 to charge depending how dead it is. It doesn't lose much life from sitting around.
The Li-ion ones don't seem to lose much either. They stay in my truck all year round and if I turn it on a month later the battery readout may be 95% instead of 100%

Yea not looking for the good old jump packs... they never worked out for me...

I "had" two DieHard ones before this... always low on charge when I needed it... the problem is the 20AH Sealed Lead Acid Battery inside.. Besides that. It is super bulky.

The older versions of this.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07776PVH5/?tag=atomicindus08-20

All I can tell you is that Li-Ion ones works... Jumped my VW and the Honda No issue... Only asking because it wasn't working today. Not sure if I needed new one or... this one just felt too cold, or too low on charge. Either case not going to chance it. Probably still good as a power bank.

Nope, your not alone. They have no reserve capacity for extended cranking and not capable of absorbing much current in the same way as a "real jump pack"

An Emergency/DIY tool at best

Wait until the GB150 goes on sale if you don’t mind a double size lithium jumper. I paid $173 a little over a year ago. They are $250 now.

This keeps coming up........

Quality is all over the charts......
Counterfeit units are often sold even at every retail and wholesale level.......
It’s s battery it still needs to charged occasionally............every battery has parasitic loss even sitting disconnected.

It’s buyer beware..........
It’s also buyer to be aware these units an go into melt mode in use or sitting the seat.......just like any other lithium battery especially the cheap ones with no protection circuits.

Probably not alone, but one of the last holdouts.

Leads are short because the jumper is literally small enough to lay right where the terminals are.

Self-discharge of Li-ion is about half of lead acid, and cycle life is about x3-4. None of the units i've had, had any parasitic draw problems.

Each jump only takes 2-3% of the charge, so multiple goes is not an issue. You can also recharge them using the cigarette lighter.

The old lead jump packs are a thing of the past, its time to move on.

I picked up a GB50 and GB70 in the fall of 2019. I charged them up and left them in my cars. First use of the GB70 was about 10 months later. It still had 75% charge. I jumped my car three times before finally replacing the battery. This was in August and a CRV could probably be jump started with static electricity, so take it for what it’s worth. 5 months later I finally brought it inside to charge up. It was either at 50% or 25%. I suspect 50%, but the LED for 50 is dead.

The GB50 was brought inside to charge after 14 months and no usage. That one was down to 75%.

So based on this limited experience, I would say if you oversize the pack a little and charge before the winter, you should be okay letting them sit a full year, in case you forget to charge it throughout the year.

My older jump and carry can similarly sit for a year, but does need to be recharged before the winter. But it’s heavy and bulky and these little packs are just too convenient.

Costco will totally return that, by the way.

LOL... I don't think I can be that guy... that returns a dead Christmas tree after Christmas. Warranty was 1 year, I am pretty sure I pass that warranty period long time ago..

I think my mind is set for those 3 choices... will do another search for any negative reviews/feedbacks before hitting the purchase button.

Thanks folks for the feedback.

wasn't really complaining about the Costco one, it jump started both the CRV / vw fine when it was working... now it died on me once, I should probably take consideration to replace it. never know next time where I will get stranded. I asked the question because I value the opinion of the GJers folks here with their experiences, and will use those information / opinions to make an informed purchase. Where everything boils down to best bang for the buck for the limited pennies I have in my wallet and needs.

Just saying... share your experiences, I won't judge. :)

another option

take it apart and try to fix it?

see what's going on with the cells. if they're bad, maybe you could replace them for cheap. guessing there's some 18650s or 21700s in there?

could be worth a quick look.

:) first thing in my mind, I tried, but couldn't find the screws. Since it is still working as a power bank, Maybe later times... It has USB-C, it will be pretty good for the Lenovo T15 that takes USB C power source.

I have three well-reviewed models from Amazon, I think Anker or Aukey is the brand on two of them. Have had for several years and try to recharge them twice a year at most. They have been up to the task every time I have needed to use them.

Which is fairly regularly in my wife's car where the kids like to leave anywhere from 1-6 dome lights on...

You're giving me flashbacks circa early 2000's when we owned a Honda Odyssey that had a far too convenient to leave on all interior light button right next to the radio.

well, if there's no parasitic drain issues, i'm sold.
i'll try one when my lead-acid jump n carry eventually dies.

I would highly recommend a larger Antigravity "micro-start".

Noco all day.
I have 4 chargers and 2 tenders... I have had them for years and never failed me. They hold a charge for an insanely long time. Never had a situation where it couldn't start the vehicle.

Can you post a link where you found it for $76, I'm only seeing it for $99.95

The price fluctuates a lot on Amazon- it's $100 now, but it was $76 when I posted that. Check camels to see the range. I paid $69 for mine in November on Amazon, but it's usually at $100. If you're not in a rush, set up an alert; this is what I did.

hopefully that works
