best light choice for new build?

Hi everyone, I am new to the journal, but have read a lot of posts. I would appreciate suggestions on lights for a 30 by 43 shop with 12 ft ceilings. This will be a multi use building; autos, metals, ceramics. I prefer something surface or recess mount. I am just learning about lux and foot/candles. What do I need to see well everywhere? As a 58 yr old, more light is always better! Also do I need to use a lighting layout calculator?
G.E has one but I do not understand all of the units for calculation. Thanks in advance.
