I am replacing 4 sets of lights in my barn using T8 fixtures and bulbs. My questions are two fold?

Should I use 4x1 or 2x2 (4 bub enclosure)
What is the brightest bulb allowed or do they cap out at 4100k 32w?

I think your question is a bit difficult. Are you saying there's a 4-lamp 2x2 fixture? If there is, it would likely cost significantly more to buy and lamp than a 1 x 4 T8 job. I doubt the light at the bench height and/or floor level would be much different.

Other than that, it's is going to get pretty scientific. I guess you need to look at reflectors, lenses and baffles to direct the light (lumens). There are 5000K lamps called "soft daylight" but the lumen output is actually a tad less than the 4100K and 3500K lamps.

I'd be more concerned about the work environment than the science. IOW, multispectrum lighting.
