Hey all, I'm in the process of restoring an old Craftsman block grinder and I'm turning to you all, the pros for some advice on how to remove rust from this gooseneck lamp cord.

It's very light, I'm not sure if I should hit it on the wire wheel, dremel it, sand it, etc... And after I get it off, would something like CLP work to prevent future rust?

Thanks all, sincerely,

Wire wheel.....Don't know about painting it - it'll flake off when you articulate the lamp. Bottom line is that the original finish has been compromised by the rust. After wire wheeling it, I'd treat it to plenty of wax, coats of oil, or whatever suits you to keep any future corrosion at bay. Of course, the best way to keep rust at bay is to use it a lot.

I recently removed rust from one of those, of course it was from an old desk lamp. I used an electrolysis bath, a wire brush, and oiled it.

I've restored a couple of the same. . .wire wheel then prime and paint. I didn't have any problem with them sticking and I haven't had any flaking.

I have used WD-40 and a red scotch pad.

Red or gray depending on how thick the rust is.

On my mill vise, I had a little bit of not so much rust, but some surface staining where the cosmoline coated paper had a few wrinkles in it. I took a couple paper towels, some white vinegar, and laid in on top for maybe 15 minutes. I pulled it off and it turned the steel black. I had a hell of a time getting the black off. I finally used some buffing compound to get it off.

Turned out great, thanks everyone. I hit it on the wire wheel and that cleaned the **** out of it. Afterwards rubbed it down with some CLP and now it looks great!

I just finished restoring my Craftsman block grinder and I hit my goose lamp with a wire wheel. Primered, paint, clear. No sticking of paint or cracking.
