Atf is what I go for, plus I can mix with acetone for penetrating oil.

if i don't need it in large quantities i use CLP (clean, lube, preserve) find it in the gun cleaning section at your local sporting goods store.

I use LPS2 for mild protection, heavy coat of LPS3 for long-term storage or stuff that's critical.

I have used Kroil as well.

I use whatever liquid is in the quart can labelled "air compressor oil" in my air compressor... and then I have a ton of these little bottles around labelled air tool oil.... so i use those.

I've never used anything but if I did find the need I would probably use some sort of gun oil. CLP, Rem oil, Ballistol, etc...

I'm looking for something to put on my industrial finish Snap On ratchet; they aren't supposed to be bad, but apparently the Southern humidity is a little much for it.

I've been wiping it down with WD-40, but it only lasts a couple of days.

My next plan was to buy some oilcloth and sew a "sock" for it, like a gun sock.

Corrosion X, Corrosion XHD, Break Free CLP, any synthetic motor oil, Sprayon aerisol waxy coating (modern cosmoline), or vapor bags.

Pretty much in that order. Corrosion X even works in salt water. Anything will work. Question should be " How often do you want to apply it?".

Gibbs oil. Or whatever is on the rags when I'm done working and start wiping down the tools as I'm cleaning up.

I have used gun socks...they work great...as well as thin or lite gun oil...

If the tool gets into a wet environment, I'll wipe it down with WD40, but I keep a dehumidifier running all the time. I have a machine shop in my garage and the dehumidifier has kept my tools and machines rust free for years.

Overall humidity in your shop is going to be a huge factor. If you can keep the humidity down the you will do all your tools a favor...

For hammers & axes and such, why not use boiled linseed oil? Or even some type of clear urthane coating? I would think that is better long-term protection if they are going to sit around for months at a time unused rather than having to re-oil them every couple weeks.

Eezox is awesome at rust prevention and lubrication and smells good too...
