I'm moving into an enormous new shop/barn with a raised wood floor. (Made from massive old growth timbers, currently has a car collection sitting on it) The place is very old, and probably never been cleaned. It's very dark and cave like inside, so I want to get some white paint on the floor.

What kind of paint should I be using? Will oil based Kilz work? How would you clean an old floor like this first? I don't think pressure washing is going to be an option. I don't expect that anything is going to stick perfectly, but it shouldn't be hard to keep an extra bucket of paint around for touch ups.

Nimrod's Garage has wood floors-dirty and oil stained, but it oozes character and old-school. A painted floor IMHO will look great until it starts getting dirty and worn, then it will look like ****. To clean and brighten it up, I would focus on the walls and the lighting and leave the floors in the rough especially if it is made from old growth lumber. If you have your heart set on paint, I've heard of guys using paint made for porch floors with success

If pressure washing is out of the question, I would try a stiff push broom as a scrub brush with simple green or other degreasing type soap. Use a floor squeegee to push it down the drain if you have one or outside, or work in small sections capturing the water as you go with a shop vac
