Hi people. I'm building a 40x40, two 9x9 drs. placed 3ft. from right side wall, then 3ft. between drs. I,m thinking of placing a 2post lift in the rear right hand corner with the right side post about 3to4ft. from the right side wall, and so a lifted car would be 3to4ft. from rear wall. I like this arrangment so the rest of gar. will be clear floor. Do any of you guys who have lifts, or anyone else for that matter have a better suggestion , or does this sound logical? I need to know placement before const. so my guy can make slab extra thick there. Thank you, Joe

The distance from your side wall seems good. I believe the general rule for a walking path between objects is 3 feet. So 3-4 should be good. For the distance from the back wall, I would think of the longest vehicle you would be using on the lift (think of your vehicles, your friends vehicles, your family's vehicles, etc.) and plan so there is atleast 3-4 feet walking distance in front of that vehicle.

Id leave a bit more room between the sidewall, room for either workbench or a rolling cart, but enough so you cand still work comfortably. I get pissed off and cranky when Im working and theres no room for a shelf or table of somesort to put something. Just a thought.

Thanks guys, yea, maybe a slight adjustment for a deep bench is in order. Just wanted some other peoples take on this before I do it. Joe

Just make sure there is enough room for whatever you might be using to get through. At some point it might make sense for that engine hoist to need to come through that side, and the *smack* it doesn't fit.

I'm with kartracer about getting pissed off and cranky when there isn't enough room. The walls make me feel crowded, and I'd rather work with a car next to me then a wall.

Rotary Lift Layout Dimensions

You might consider putting that lift in the middle bay...that will give you a clear area around the entire vehicle if you need it. You will probably have more room than you think with your existing plan....Keep in mind that if the lift column is 3' off the wall, the vehicle will still be 1-1/2'-2' inside the column. I (hope) I attached a Rotary SPOA10 installation manual to this post...It has all of the recommended dimensions for their lifts in the first couple of pages. Hope it all works out for you!

3-4 feet doesn't give you much room for things like pulling off tires, or worse yet, pulling axles out of rearends. I'd re-think that one a little.
