The basic (cheap) ones can be found nearly everyplace, including pawn shops. If you want something good, and U.S. made: http://usjack.com/

I've had the typical HF, Walmart, etc, but much prefer the 2 sets from US Jack.

U.S. Jack Stands are evidently very nice, very strong etc...................

Why EXACTLY are my 3 ton and 6 ton Harbor Freight stands SO INFERIOR
that I should replace them with units costing 3-4 times more.

And yes................I do value my life laying under a car !!!!!!!!!!!

I've had my HF 3-ton and 6-ton jack stands for 15 years and they work just fine.

They're far stronger for a given weight rating. Aside from that, frankly, there's not a whole lot to fail on a jack stand. If it holds a car up a dozen times, it'll hold a car up thousands of times. Not accounting of course for abuse like dropping a car on them suddenly instead of gently lowering the weight onto them. But the US Jack stands will hold up to that kind of abuse more readily.

Which independent research firm has test results to substantiate this claim?

Logic dictates that jack stands which are rated for twice as much weight, will withstand more abuse.

If you're comparing HF 12 ton stands to the US Jack 6 ton stands, they may be fairly similar in strength.

edit: the HF 12 ton stands are $100, so the US Jack 6 ton stands aren't THAT much more expensive for Made in USA CoO, if that kind of thing is important to you.

Lots of people use the HF or other off brand without issue. I don't like that style because most have a very deep U or V to the cradle. While that is nice for solid axles, it is pretty difficult on smaller uni body vehicles.

IF I was to purchase new and had the money to spend, one of the euro (possibly now went to Asia) makers of the flat top 3 leg stands such as AC hydraulics or US jack would be my choice. I ended up making a basic, fixed height set as well as restoring a old set of walker stands. Not very difficult to do, but of course user discretion is advised if you have 0 strength of materials experience or lack the welding skills.

Highest quality for the price IMO. They're also rated for twice the weight of comparable jack stands from other companies, as they're rated per stand, not per pair as usual.

They just rate them differently, being by the single. So their 3 ton jack stand pair is equivalent to the HF or the like 6 ton pair, weight capacity wise. Not sure why they did that.

Anyone have the max height on those 10 ton U.S. Stands? I didn't see it on the website

28.5"

Here's what zkling is talking about:

I bought mine from this place: http://www.uniquetruck.com/p-6376-3-ton-jack-stand-flat-top-with-rubber-cushion.aspx?affiliateID=10056&gclid=CjwKEAjw-ZqrBRDt_KjhjcbzhhISJAAlRGvlgZAMX5OEBx10-sDuBorn2kiRU76IW_vL1uyO4WQANRoCAyLw_wcB

I think they were the cheapest when shipping was figured in.

the 3 ton i have don't have a deep U on the cradle... the picture on the box shows it but the actual stands look more like the pic for the 3 ton aluminum stands...

If they can't even get the product to match the picture on the box, what makes you think they can weld to a spec? Or they care what grade steel they use? I think this is the wrong thing to try to save money on.

Edit: As I look at it, the weak link is the bogus casting, not the weldment. Lord knows what the Chinese put into those castings. They put sawdust in baby formula that killed babies.

The other designs that use pipe and a cross pin, at least you could tell if the pin was damaged, bending, or the hole in the pipe was elongating.

THAT SAID:
I have a set that looks like these that I bought from Sears 30 years ago. They are made from welded extruded angle, but have a similar cast saddle. Don't know why I've felt safe under those all these years. They have never let me down. I'm sure they too were made in China. My guess is they these things never fail. I guess I just don't want to be the one in a million. Especially since I have the extra $100 to buy US made stands.

How about this- if you buy a set of these, at least do a proof load test before you get under a car supported by these. Check every tooth. Load them as much as you can then inspect for cracks after each test.

I have 2 sets, total of 4 of those stands for about 5 years or so now and they are the best stands I have had although I do have others from Sears and such but these are just robust, safe and work well with all my foreign cars. Have I mentioned safety? After all that's what its all about right!!
