I'm in the market for a new roll cab tool box. My budget is $5000. I'll only buy new. I currently have a 26" cabinet, mid cabinet and top box that is overflowing. Thinking I need around a 50-60" roll cab. Looking for recommendations for a NEW cab. I don't want to mess with sorting through marketplace or craigslist for used boxes.

Me personally, I wish I hadn't spent the money that I did on boxes when I was starting out. Are you using it for a living? Will you be rolling it around a lot? If you aren't planning on moving it a lot, the HF US General 56" top and bottom would work well and you would have $3500 or so left for more tools. I've had Snap On Krl's and the big Mac Macsimizer. Sold them and now have several of the USG's. Wish I could have gotten them when starting out, as it would have saved me a lot of money and I could have put it towards more tools, car payments, etc.

Obviously your prerogative to buy what you want, but why does a used box scare you so much?
Not scared, but I don't want to mess with driving around the area to look at various boxes as the ones for sale locally are not something I'm interested in purchasing.

I don't use tools for my living. I'm a hobbyist and DIYer. My profession is very well compensated, so spending $5000 on a box I want isn't even a consideration.

I know $5000 is the bottom end for a tool truck box and those models I have little interest in. I've been impressed by what I've read about Rousseau boxes along with Lista.

Lista is really neat. Do you need it to roll? I think that's overrated, especially if you'll only have it at home. A fixed cabinet is often a lot more sturdy. Gives you more space too since there are no wheels that'd raise it off the ground.

If you don't plan on moving it in the next 5 years... might as well borrow a pallet jack if you will ever move it again, and instead get a more solid cabinet.

Hazet has a nice ~120cm (80") workbench/cart too, it's probably somewhere in the 3k range.

You're not a full time mechanic. Personally, I bought a bunch of HF boxes (US General) and they've served me very very well for decades... I'd much rather have multiples than a single high dollar box...

You could find a legit guy or dealer and get a nice Epiq or KRL for $5k. But if your forever box isn't worth the hassle, by all means settle for less.

I don't need it to roll. I have forks for my tractor if I were to need to move a fixed cabinet. Thanks for the Hazet info. I'll check them out as well.

A little under your budget but you may check out Extreme boxes. Stricklytoolboxes (a supporter of GJ) may be the answer to your prayers. Good, heavy boxes with exceptional customer service
I've been impressed by what I've read and watched online about their boxes.

I've never been on a tool truck before as I haven't had a need to. I'll call the tool truck corporate numbers and find the local franchisee and see If they would deal on a new upper tier box. I've read that they actually pay about half retail, so If they want to make a cash deal, I'd be interested in an upper tier box.

They often have used boxes too. Good luck.

It sounds like you're looking for something a little more upscale than this but I'm really impressed with the Husky box I bought for the race car trailer. It's not the build quality of the Mac and Snap-On boxes I have in the shop but it's holding up really well in an environment that, in my case anyway, is tougher than the shop.

I totally get wanting to buy top of the line stuff and I wouldn't fault anyone for doing that but if someone is looking for good quality for use in the home shop for significantly less than $5k I think they're worth a look.

I've heard good things about Husky boxes being a good value.

Feels like a great suggestion.

That said, I'd buy HF and spend a bunch on tools/other workshop upgrades. Their boxes are legitimately good

Thanks! I didn't know Tekton had Rousseau make their boxes. I think I may have just found my new box. I just wish they came in a larger variety of colors.

True! I hold no hate for HF boxes. In fact I have had the HF 14" side box on my Tekton for several years now and it is the perfect combo.

An HF box is for sure a good option as well.

I'm in the exact same boat and actively looking with a similar budget. I have a small garage for the amount of **** I have, so I'm looking to consolidate down from (2) HF 44" boxes and (1) HF 32" box. I prefer a box with more shallow drawers as I don't generally have a lot of tools in plastic cases like pro tech's do.

I really like the Lista boxes, but the one I want is about $8k after tax and delivery. The Extreme EXQ series is badass for $5k. I like the layout of the RX series the best, but it's slightly lighter built (still well built). We've had an Extreme in our race shop for probably 15yrs and it's held up great to dozens of guys who don't give a ****. We'll see what I end up with, but Extreme is a front runner.

Go direct to Rousseau, they have configerator tool, choose selection of cabinet sizes, drawer options, tops, locks and a pretty wide selection of colors .

Surprised nobody said Icon Tool box’s

I don’t like a big ol tall set up top / bottom
but
I would rather have 2 - 56” benches or a 72” bench.

in my garage I have a 72 Mac- maximizer, and 2-44 & 1-56 us general all benches !

in my other garage I have red / black craftsman 60 bench and a 56 top / bottom

They are still sitting out of the way under plastic but I'm looking forward to moving from my older USG 56" to the two USG 72" boxes I grabbed back when they were still about $900 on sale. I just need to get some more framing done in the shop so they have a home side by side behind my fab table. I'll remove the wheels and set them on blocks so the steel work top I'm putting on them isn't so high and I have same color cabinets to hang above them.
12' of boxes and cabinets will be less than 5k combined. Hoping to get it done sometime this winter.

You could use the stationary cabinet of 24" height as a top if wanted .
Could choose 3" less depth if wanted or keep it same as bottom .
They do a hutch as well but I not seen one or looked on the site for details of that .
With current box prices Rousseau comes out a pretty good value quality option and no need complain about drawer layout as you make it to your choice ...

I think that Rosseau or Vidmar or Lista figure that if you want a top cabinet, you’ll just buy a taller cabinet in the first place. My List and Vidmar are approx 50” wide by 5’ tall, and I’ve seen them 6’ tall.

Rosseau technically only do the stationary cabinet at max of 5' roughly.
38" is max for roller cabinet, I seen tech at local subaru dealership with 24" tall 24" deep 48" wide stationary bolted to top of 60" wide 27" deep, 34" tall (plus 6" for wheels) roller cabinet, Space at end of roller cab had notebook and shelf for various diag tools lights and battery charging .
Was nice setup, color was a nice grey, drawer separators/compartments is nice touch too ...

That sounds like a nice setup at the dealer. I just looked at Lista and their current max is 66”. Not sure if you can put wheels on that.

There are a lot of pluses for this type of cabinet:
- Extremely configurable to size, width, number of drawers, size of drawers
- High load ratings for both the drawers and cabinet
- Option of full width drawers even on wide cabinets
- built-in drawer divider options that can be easily customized.

My problem with the Rosseau is their biggest box is quite a bit smaller than a typical 72" tool box in width and depth. Otherwise, they are damn nice. If I wasn't looking to consolidate down to one box, while still keeping the box mobile, I'd take a heavy look at them.

The nice part about the Tekton/Rousseau box is that it is built similar to the Vidmar/Lista cabinets. It has the carriage style drawer, built-in divider slots and killer weight limits on the drawers. You pay for it of course but they are nice.

In all my work shops I've always done Vidmar cabinets for part, tools, etc. as long as it didn't have to be mobile.

..............................

Key thing is 27 to 30 inch deep drawers, instead of standard 20 to 24. Along with high weight slides, those are important features. The latches, and how you like them are the next thing to consider.

The numbers were slightly different, but I was in your exact scenario in ~2010. My budget was $1,500-$1,800 which I could comfortably afford. I ended up stretching my budget and buying a brand new Snap-on KRL722 for $2,600 (~60% off list price) from a high volume dealer willing to make a deal. He was my 3rd dealer and the first two were terrible. I have since met a 4th and 5th dealer that are also terrible, so my not-so-statistically-significant study predicts a 20% success rate with this plan haha. A new KRL722 should be within your budget from most dealers. A savvy high-volume dealer that takes advantage of factory-subsidized promotions might be able to get you into a 54" KTL1022, 60" Epic, or even a 68" Epic in a weird color or lightly used trade-in if you're willing to stretch the budget into the $7-8 range.

If your budget is inflexible at $5,000 and you insist on a new top-tier box, check out Lista. Their lead times are pretty terrible right now (plan for ~25-30 weeks), but they make a top notch product.
