Best rolling shop stool?

Looking at rolling shop stools. Something that can get pretty low to the ground so I'm not super uncomfortable cleaning wheels/tires or doing brake pads (I don't have a vehicle lift). Any suggestions would be helpful!

After 3 years of sporadic use my HF stool is still rolling along. I caught mine on sale for $19.99 iirc. CJDave.

I picked up a used doctors office chair for $10 on Craigslist. I love it, it's strong, comfortable, high enough to use at the bench and goes low enough to do brakes.

I have never bent it any but I do weigh less than 200lbs too :D


Just as a side note on garage "stools", since I work on motorcycles without a table lift a lot I also have others like a triangle shaped stamped steel unit on casters, but I also I have two of these old Hirsch stools one in the original orange and a later black one with a plastic composite material for the top. Honestly they been around for like ever, solid as can be and they give a lift up into the top of my toolbox and help me reach into engine compartment or up to the roof of my SUV with a Kayak, and better than my 2 ft Werner step ladder.

I have an older Craftsman with the short back. Original wheels weren't the best so I upgraded to some nicer aftermarket ones and now it has a much improved smoother roll.

Yep, Eidos isn't cheap. We've got a lot of their stuff at work and it holds up fairly well, but you have to understand that we are 24/7 operation and they are shared by about 400 people throughout our hangars. For home and normal shop use, you could expect to pass them down to your grand kids!

I have the HF stool round top and the flat top with tray below. Couldn't beat it for $$$$.

the short back is just enough support to make a difference and the seat is padded enough / wide enough to accommodate just about any size read end. Also like the width of the tray under the seat (and it has a magnetized center)

I lucked out (maybe) a few years ago where I ran across a random craigslist ad where a guy had about 75 new rolling/adjustable height simple stools (black round padded vinyl, 4 chromed legs, halfway decent casters) from some sort of large medical/hospital project that got canned....I bought two of them, maybe $30? maybe $25?. Medical equipment stuff should be good, right?

somewhere in the world, I own a basic HF type shorter rolling stool w/ tray. I think a friend ended up absorbing it into his shop & ultimately I didn't care because I found that it was often prone to tipping over and I'd grown to hate it.

I still use the HF round roller seat too.

It makes a good speaker stand when I am working on speakers too. I can set a big speaker on it, move it around, spin it around, etc.

I have four of the HF stools ..... BUT had to change the casters when the ball bearings started falling out of the originals. And the replacement casters cost more than the stools but they should now last my lifetime.

Growing up I've always liked the cramer kik-step stool. It rolls on wheels until you sit down then it stays in place. I like it cause it lets me use to as a step when i need to step up in the engine bay, and it perfect height for most brake works. It don't roll while you're seating down so that's the only issue I see with it.

I took an old Craftsman seat and replaced the seat and casters... Used to be just a piece of plywood for the seat.

My wife always asks for "her" seat when she comes out to the garage.

It's now at least 40 years old.

I really like my Traxion 2-700 ProGear Mobile Gear Seat. Wheels are large enough the don’t hang up in the cracks, adjustable height for no matter what I am working on and very comfortable seat.

Another vote for the Traxion!

I have a bad back and had a total knee replacement a couple of years ago. I use it when I'm swapping wheels or doing brake work. I also use it every time I wash our cars, rolling around the car to get to anything below the hood or trunk lid.

I had rolling stool like the one that DBF posted above in post #6 which I got from Harbor Freight. The tiny wheels would get caught in the seams of my driveway when I washed the car. After falling off that one a few times, both sideways and backwards, I looked for something better. The Traxion has large nylon wheels that roll right over the seams. It's height adjustable so I can raise it up to wash the fenders and doors and lower it to wash the door sills. The seat back is low but offers good back support. It's also shaped enough like a bucket seat that it you stay in/on it. I haven't fallen off this one yet. The tool tray rotates. A little pricey, but worth every penny!

bought a sears craftsman of that model 10+ years ago, love it. paid maybe 30/40 bucks for it. I wanted to buy another one but they never restocked them. btw mine is still working great.

Liked it but got tired of carrying it 100' to the other area where I tend to need one, so bought another one 2 years later.

Casters don't need replaced and the "wrap-around" ring for height is a bit nicer than the HF similar one's single lever, plus I paid more so it's GOTTA be better :evil: ...Steve
