Best rotary screw compressor

Dear Garage Journalers,

I have a dilemma. I have a commercial building which I am using for my cars. Half of the building is dedicated to car storage and doing light repairs on vehicles. The other half will be a lounge setting where people will be able to sit relax watch TV and enjoy themselves. The two sides are separated by a 2X6 double-5/8-sheetrock insulated wall. I am trying to choose the right COMPRESSOR for my application. Anyone with expertise in this field that could answer my following questions would be much appreciated. I have determined that I want to install a rotary screw unit. Even though I will not be running the unit continuously I really want to outfit this building with the top of the line unit so no matter what future uses this building will have the compressor will handle it (Within reason). For my use, I will have 10 Bendpak HD-9 air locking lifts which will not really consume any real CFM but I will also have a blast cabinet, and would like the ability to paint, have two or more people working with air tools ect. I haven’t calculated the exact CFM usage because it is too early to determine exactly what I will be doing in this place, how often, and most of all I am looking to over-size the unit beyond my application. A major concern of mine is sound of the compressor resonating into the lounge area through the wall disturbing people in the lounge with an obnoxious sound. I know many of you will think I may be going overkill with a rotary screw considering my application and intermittent runtime, but I really am preparing for future. I am pretty deadest on a screw and am aware of the upsides and downsides. I also have searched back threads but there are no exact answers to the questions I am looking for.

My initial research has led me to pricing out the Quincy CGS-5 and CGS-7.5 models. If I choose to step the size of the compressor from a 5 to a 7.5 or even a 10 would the sound be louder on the larger units?

What is the “TOP OF THE LINE” rotary screw out there? I know a compressor is not too complex of a design. But, if cost were not a factor. Which company makes the BEST units considering part availability, warrantee, and overall build quality? Is there one clear cut manufacturer?

Being that this will not be a heavily used shop and air usage may be intermittent, as well as my concern of hearing the unit cycling though the wall in the lounge, can I up size the air tank from a 60 to an 80 or even a 120 in order to reduce the unit from turning on (cycling) as often. While adding the benefit of additional air on demand for future applications? Are there any downsides to doing this?

As far as sound goes, will a low rpm reciprocating compressor and a rotary screw of the same size have similar dBA? Has anyone worked around both?

Thanks for everyone’s help and input in advance!

An alternate reality in a parallel universe.
I'd do a search on this, there's been a lot of rescent talk.

"Screw compressors are made to run under full load" etc

This is wrong, many of the manufactures have variable speed drive screw compressors. I just installed two Gardner Denver 40 hp VSD units in one of my facilities. The reason I chose them was because this facility had a long standing relationship with GD and the local dealer. Additionally many parts are interchangeable with the two 50 hp GD screws in this location also.

Although VFD drives are awesome technology for efficiency and some states even give you rebate incentives I don’t want to go this direction. I program VFD driven hydronic pump systems for a living, and know exactly the maintenance a system like this entails. Even though I could personally program and diagnose my own unit, I rather go single speed and save the headaches of VFD for work.

i work for a tug boat co at their repair facility. we have 6 screw type compressors i believe the largest is 75 hp to a small one that i think is 25 hp and new. i can check and get more info on the smaller one. the larger ones run continualy, the small one (25hp) allso runs continualy. it makes a massive amount of air, way more than you would need and they are noisy.:)

In my experience Gardener Denver is good but a little loud. My company uses Atlas Copco. The newer units are fairly quiet and we've never had any problems.

I've had a Sullair ES-6 for about five years....

Small amount of painting... Bought it mostly for my bead blaster.. I get an unlimited amount of air for the blaster. Connected to my original tank and also bought the dryer... I am more than satisfied...
I have to adnit that it is LOUD so I moved it to another room...
Google it........
