Best Screwdrivers

Very nice screwdriver collections. Here is the latest shot of mine. I also had a few questions. Would I need to get either a Pozidriv screwdriver or a Phillips #4? I have neither in the collection and didn't see the need for them. Don't own a British car and I don't believe Pozidriv is used much in the US.

I seldom see a Pozidriv on a U.S. product, so if that’s all you work on, you probably won’t need one.

They are used more widely than on British built vehicles though. They are pretty much a European standard so you will find then on european cars, and just about every european woodscrew.

Phillips 4? You find them more on older vehicles, newer ones tend to substitute something you can transmit more force to, such as a Torx, but you never know…

Radiator drains on many BMW’s are a plastic plug with… a Pozidriv No.4 recess, and that includes my U.S. built Z4!

Pozidriv/Supadriv is common on ikea furniture and some cabinets. I'd at least get a set of bits.

Phillips #4 is not very common, but I occasionally run into them on legacy mounting hardware.

A lot of modern cabinet hardware is European and use Pozidrive. I see more of it all the time. I only have bits and haven't felt the need for dedicated drivers. Although.......New tools? Hmmmm.

It's best to get the correct driver or bits. Phillips just doesn't fit. You may be able to get away with a Phillips #1 in a Pozi#2, but at some point the screw will strip, or your driver will be damaged.

The Pozidriv is the slightly heftier one.

You can fit a Phillips 2 in a Pozidriv 2, with a bit of slop, but as you say, better to get the correct tools.

The idea of having a set of bits for the lesser used style is a good one. I tend to carry fixed blade Pozidriv’s and Phillips bits as backup.

I do find Pozidriv bits are a bit more prone to dropping out of bit holders though.

Thanks for the feedback on the Pozidriv. I noticed that the Wiha multi-bit driver I have has two Pozidriv bits in it. I may eventually get a more extensive bit set, but probably covered for now.

For precision mini screwdrivers I have the Wiha ESD Master Technician set (black/yellow end). Love them. My favorite regular screwdrivers to use are the Craftsman Pro with the Red and black handles from around 2007.

never seen PH4 (or PZ4 for that matter)

PZ is useful for ikea as previously mentioned but also for european appliances. e.g. my miele dishwasher has a bunch of PZ2 screws.

I really like a set of Vessel screwdrivers I bought last year, fat chunky grips, pound through shanks, nice short blades and good strong grippy tips. Great choice for auto mechanics

I have a couple of sets of Vessel bits in JIS 0-4, but I’ve never seen or owned their full screwdrivers. I’ll have to look into them. McMaster sells the bits, but of course with them the brand isn’t known until they arrive.

I went ahead and bought two Wera Pozidriv screwdrivers (#1 and #2) to have just in case. I did find that I had Pozidriv bits in one of my multi-driver screwdrivers and in a bit set. I like fixed screwdrivers better, but should be covered. Held off on getting a #3 Pozidriv. I don't think you can go wrong with Wera - love the handles and they have the lazer trip that really grips the screws. They were also one of the best performers in the screwdriver test/comparison.

I have added a few more screwdrivers and have the massive Amazon bill to prove it. Picked up 3 pozidrive and a Phillips #4. I doubt I will ever use them, but I wanted to have them just in case. We all love tools, but this is total overkill on screwdrivers. I really like the feel and looks of the Wera screwdrivers. Also, PB Swiss is very nice, but also expensive. Wera has a nice selection available on Amazon or through KC Tools.

Very nice collection, and well organized. I like the SnapOn kit with the ratcheting screwdriver. I have that one, but not the kit. I had to take my SnapOn set out of the blow molded tray - just didn't have the room in the drawer. The organizer is nice.

If anyone still wants to get a hold of some classic USA made acetate drivers these are the last of them. These will soon be imported as will all Channellock drivers. We purchased the last 143 of them but selling them for still less than msrp.

I'm new to Garage Journal, but I have read a number of articles on tool recommendations in the past. I'm a tool junkie/collector and lately have been obsessed with screwdrivers and have amassed quite a collection. I came across this video on YouTube, which has an excellent comparison of most of the top brands. Here is the link:

To summarize the comparison, PB Swiss, Wiha and Wera came out on top of most of the tests. He did not include SnapOn. I have SnapOn, Wiha, Wera, GearWrench and have recently added PB Swiss and Vessel. I think PB Swiss feels the best in my hand - love their grips. The Wiha heavy duty set feels heaviest and most robust. I would say that the Wera grips feel second best and then the Wiha. I don't like the square feel of the SnapOn screwdrivers, but they do allow for a lot of torque. I also have a few Vessel Megadora that feel great in my hand. However, those were sort of middle of the pack in the tests. It comes down to personal preference on how they look and feel, but I guess you can't have enough good screwdrivers. Here is a photo of the screwdriver drawer minus the PB Swiss except for one of them.

I'm a little late to the show, but I love my Wright #2 Phillips. The handle has a large dia with nice grippable flutes and the tip seems indestructible.

That is a set I never looked at or considered. However, I think I have more than enough screwdrivers. I sold a GearWrench set to a friend of mine to reduce the redundancy. Wright makes some good tools.
