Best Solid Fence Stain

Hey guys - I need to restain my fence and I need advice on what product to buy.

The previous homeowner built/stained the fence and it is time for a fresh coat. They used an orangish colored stain, which we don’t care for, so the plan is to cover it with a dark brown. Hence me going with a solid stain.

Can you advise the best brand to buy? I’m planning on buying a graco sprayer for the job, but I’m open to feedback there too.

No complaints with Cabots, but then my first hand experience is very minimal. Also had good success and more experience with Olympic. Have used Behr and Flood too.

Just started staining my deck with semi transparent stain/sealer from Cabot, dark mahagony. It rained the night i put the first coat on the deck and I saw it was beading the water up on the flat surface. I'll be applying the second coat soon if the weather ever quit raining......

What Graco?

I have been looking at the Magnum Project Painter Plus. I have zero experience with paint sprayers though. I’m looking at these because using one of the handhelds ones with the smaller containers seems like a PIA.

I'm with Madison, I replaced deck boards all winter (usually 3 at a time) and used that Cabot stuff. Still looks good. The Behr that was on the old boards went fast, probably about 3 years.

Looks like a nice little sprayer. Graco's are good units and have worn well for me. Graco's are well liked by the painters in my corner of the globe. Understand it before firing it up, clean it well and store it according to their recs and it will pay for itself in no time.

I would strip it and re-stain. I used this about 5yrs ago and it still looks pretty good, but its getting about time to do it again.

BB, you do realize stains are not compatible. You have to strip off the old stain before you apply a new one. Can you find out what brand was used last? That is the only way to assure the new stain can cover over the old one without stripping.

You should strip the old coating off. Use RipIt or HD80 stripper then neutralize with Brightener before applying new stain. Be sure it is moisture content of 12% before coating. Also when cleaning be sure to apply cleaner from bottom up and rinse top down.

I have a Graco X5 and like it a lot, but it takes a lot of concentration and you have to move fast...planning ahead and making room for you to move around is critical. Not trying to scare you off, but that thing will take product from the bucket and apply it to whatever you want at a very fast rate. Stopping and starting in the middle of a board is not advised, or if you do make sure it isn't a hard stop.

Cleanup can get messy, just make sure you've got at least 3-4 5 gallon buckets around for cleanup...and DO NOT take your safety glasses off until you have unplugged the machine and it is put away.

Go with a “hybrid” solid colour stain. Best product for repaints. It’s kinda half water half oil base . Goes on like latex, and then dries and bonds like a oil base . Sherwin has it in a superdeck product .
