Took the blades off my JD LA145 mower to sharpen them and decided they were too far gone. What is the best source for new blades? Lowes, dealer, online retailer? Any recommendations on what blades to buy? I have never used a mulching cover or bagger, and I have a tendency to hit things that tear up the blades. TIA.

I'm going to use eBay for my next set (actually next five sets, since I'll buy bulk.) I did get one set at Sears (a Craftsman lawn tractor) but they are (IMHO) overpriced.

try a real JD dealer (not lowes) the blades we have used from them have lasted longer than others, you could try mfgsupply.com

I just purchased a et for my old Gravely on ebay. I got the Gator Blades and I was able to cut about 10 minutes before the rain hit, They really cut nice. I had put on a new set of regular blades lat year but they they left a lot of stragglers when the grass was real long.

From what I could tell, these gator blades do a great job. I think it was like 38 bucks for a three blade set for a 60 inch deck.

JD dealer. The will be a bit cheaper than Lowes, as they won't come in the fancy clear package. The dealer would also have available all the optional blades, like the high lift bagging and dedicated mulching blades. Sounds like you are OK with the standard "3-in-1" blade that is decent at side discharging, bagging, and mulching.

Mower blades are not something you want to goof with. They have to be hard enough to hold an edge, but not too hard to be brittle.

I order oregon brand blades from Amazon. Oregon seems to be the manufacturer for most OEM blades, at least they are for my Hustler zero turn. Just find the part number on their website and search for it on Amazon.

The local small engine repair shop that I use has a good selection in including Gator Blades at competitive prices. I buy my expendables (saw chain, bar oil, mower blades, etc) from them and have them perform the annual service on my mower as well. I want them to be there for me when I have a real mechanical problem that I can not handle.

I buy Oregon blades from Tulsa Engine warehouse online.

I just bought 3 blades for my yazoo kees 52 inch deck. they were $9.83 each, shipping $8.95.

My mower was pretty beat up when I bought it around 4 years ago, and almost all of the parts I needed were available from them. When you order, ask for a catalog at the same time.

I always bought OE blades for my commercial mowers. They are much thicker and sturdier than the cheap blades from my limited experience on buying cheaper blades, and honestly mine were only a few bucks more than the cheapy no names.

I learned my lesson on that one real quick

I never used gators

FWIW, Gators are thicker than the OE John Deere blades I used to buy. But then again they aren't any cheaper either....

I got Gator blades (made by Oregon) for my Kubota from Bailey's, and I love them!

http://www.baileysonline.com/category.asp?catID=427

It's worth noting that there is more than one kind of Gator blade:

• Mulcher 3-in-1 Magnum
• Mulcher G6
• Mulcher 3-in-1 Magnum Fusion

Bailey's website explains the differences.

-Chris

That's better than Oregon's website. I've never found a description on their website of how the types differed.

off topic a little bit.

How do you sharpen a Gator blade, is it just like a normal blade?
Is the sharp part opposite the teeth?

Same as a regular blade. According to the site cegreen posted, the G6 blades are harder on grinding wheels than normal blades but that's the only difference in sharpening.

Tried to order 2 sets on eBay, but somehow when I committed to buy I only had one. Realized the error 2 minutes after I payed so I responded to the email listed in the PayPal confirmation and got no response. One set of blades showed up today so I contacted the seller through eBay and he tells me he doesn't read that email and somehow I should have known that. Not happy!
