What have you guys seen/implemented in your garages to help make the most of your space?

I think it would be very interesting to see what cool tips and tricks you have up your sleeves.

I have all my power tools on castors so I can park them when not in use.
I use the space under the work bench for parking my roll around tool boxes and two roll around work tables.

I find I use the tables more than the bench.
It is easier to bring the bench to the project then the other way around.

I keep my shelves shallow.
12 inches deep. Otherwise you lose stuff behind stuff.
The lowest shelf is about 5 feet off the floor.
The gives me room to park roll around tools under it.

I use white heavy duty peg board for hanging stuff.
It gives me more flexabilty then slatwall.

I hang ladders and other long, seldom used stuff from the celing.
(The verticals for the shelves also do not go all the way to the ceiling.
This gives a long top shelf for long skinny stuff.)

Shelves above the garage doors, if there's room.

That's because it's been discussed alot lately...

The search feature is your friend!

Thanks for the link.

I appreciate there may have been similar threads, but seeing as this is a discussion forum populated by enthusiasts and this sort of topic is constantly evolving, it remains a valid question?

Most of what I've seen - post wise - goes off-topic so there's little actual content. This isn't levied as a criticism per se but more of an observation from someone who is new to this forum and new to designing and building their own garage.

I got rid of my old space-eating workbench and shelves, and went with a wall-mounted fold down workbench. It's awesome. I added slatwall above the workbench, and lined one full wall with slatwall as well. Saved a TON of space.

Not sure if that's something you've considered or not, but this is what I went with. It is a bit on the pricey side...but the quality is great, and I have kids so the safety locks were a must. benchsolution.com

Good point, Tuffy22. But it doesn't have to be pricey at all. I don't know who first thought of making a bathroom mirror into a medicine cabinet, but the guy was a genius. A fold-down work bench can function the same way.

I've got two fold-down benches along the wall where I park my car. I store welding clamps behind the one I use for welding.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then here's even more -- a video:

And on the DIY front, here are the plans for making the wood one:

How do you stop the bench from always being full. My work bench is just typically consumed by a project in progress. Do you have some means of working where you store the typical work bench project items while the bench is folded?

I see how the solution could potentially work, I'm just trying to understand how it would work for me.

Load that **** into the truck and take it to the scrap yard. Makes space in the garage and $$ in your pocket.

It's a good point -- and it's both the good and the bad thing about this kind of bench. The key is to have other benches. The fold-down is pretty much task specific. You fold it down while you're working on something and then fold it back up at the end of the day. If it was my only bench, that part would drive me nuts. But as a supplement, it actually reinforces some good work habits.

As a point of trivia, the wood bench was designed so that I could still park the car in the garage when it was down. Here's an old picture that shows it.

See post 295 in the last link (show me your storage) for the ways I used every sq inch of space in my single car garage. I think the table saw storage is the best use of space in my garage.
