I'm need to buy a drywall/decking screw gun. Looking at DeWalt or Rigid.

I see speeds for either 2500 or 4000 RPM.

Any tips in best speed to use for average homeowners/DIYer. I've already been told to buy hardened tips the minute I buy the gun.

Input appreciated.

2500 RPM for wood studs, 4000 RPM for metal studs. Yes, you can use one gun for both but pick the one that matches what you will do the MOST.

AND - If you're going to do decking screws longer than about 2-1/2 (maybe 3) inches, go with the lower speed gun as it will typically have more torque.

So, if you're a typical homeowner or contractor who doesn't do commercial jobs where they use metal studs, the lower speed gun is the clear choice for fit and versatility.

I've gota DeWalt low speed screw gun and a Makita high speed screw gun. Originally I got the Makita to do a deck, but had trouble controlling it while laying on my back so I picked up the DeWalt. It was definately easier to control. Now, several years later I find that I almost exclusively reach for the Makita because it is so much lighter and therefore less fatigueing, especially when working on a latter.
