Best Storage for Combination Wrenches?

I keep most of my tools in the back seat area of my crew cab pickup truck because that's usually closest to where I need them for working on my vehicles or other equipment that I use in my tree business.

I have experimented with various kinds of tool storage, including metal toolboxes, plastic toolboxes, canvas Craftsman bags, and other varieties of canvas tool storage. For my combination wrenches I prefer to have them in order of size as much as possible. However, the canvas "wrench roll" storage by Craftsman, which is decent at best, because the wrenches love to fall out, and getting a single wrench requires me to unstrap two velcro foldover straps and it's a lot of effort just to grab a wrench not to mention the cleanup and putting away time. I am definitely not interested in digging through a bag or box.

So I do have this plastic "Plano" clear compartmented utility box, probably designed for storing screws and hardware, and it has worked very well for my metric wrenches from 6mm to 22mm. Anything bigger wouldn't fit. The box has a break in the bottom from being banged around and probably crushed by various other tools and implements in the back of my truck.

What do you guys use for storing combination wrenches in some semblance of order for mobile tool storage?

I have a large olive drab one that looks like it may be army surplus. It’s been in my camper and Motorhome basement for 20+ years. Once you put the wrenches in label each pocket with its wrench size with a sharpie. Makes it easier to pull the right wrench and put it back in the proper place when done. If there aren’t enough pockets you can put two of the smaller wrenches in one pocket.

My mobile kits , I use wrench rolls . perhaps try one of those inserts that you put into a 5 gallon bucket. they have lots of pockets both inside and out. wrenches would be visible and easy to grab. could add other tools as well.

Tool roll will likely be the winner. I have a fractional set in a roll that lives in the saddlebag on my motorcycle and a metric set that stays with the Beetle. Simple, effective and it holds a whole set in a very compact package. I had a thread about the last one I bought which I modified slightly, here's the end result. Rolls up into a package smaller than a hoagie and there's a spare slot you can keep a screwdriver or something in to boot.

I have a tool roll made of old blue jean legs. It has Barcalo, Challenger, Maple Leaf Gray, and Westward wrenches in it. I bought it at a fleamarket in old X coal mining town in the Canadian Rockies.

In my truck the tools go in a craftsman bag. The wrenches are on a wrench ring and in order by size. I don't use them frequently so it's an ok setup for me, but I would probably get tired of the wrench ring if had to use them all day.

Maybe try attaching a wrench roll to the outside or inside of a 5 gal bucket. Kinda like one of those bucket tool organizers, but for wrenches.

They'd be easy to get at, and in order at least.

I don't know how universal they are but you can buy the Facom wrench storage cases separately. Seen a few wrench sets that come in similar cases but don't know if the cases are available separately. I cannot think of a more compact way to keep wrenches together and in order.

My Stahlwille set came with a similar case. The plastic is flexible but I'm not sure if it would survive daily use and drops.

I've got a couple my wife made me years ago from a pair of old jeans. One for metric and one for standard ratcheting wrenches.

I recently bought a few sets of 440 wrenches with the holder and I really like the concept of these wrench holders. They are reasonably compact and when opened up still take up little space. I wish this style of holder was more common since so far I like them better than wrench rolls.

I'm not sure how well they would adapt to other wrenches with a beam thickness and style of the 440 since I have not tried. The round part of the holder where the open end goes is also sized for the wrench it's labeled for, so no putting a smaller wrench in that slot unless you modify the holder.

I have worked out of trucks. In a pickup without a service body this is the best way I have ever found. The stuff in a tray I really use on the front seat.
