Looking for bench top type. The contractor style rolling stand isn't needed as this will be used 90% in my shop. What are your suggestions.

If you have the space and the patience you can likely find an old Unisaw on Craigslist for around that price. Though you would loose on portability you would get easily 2x the saw. As far as contractor type saws many people seem happy with any of the big name power tool companies (dewalt, Bosch, et al). Regardless of the saw though make sure you like the fence. A good fence makes using the saw far more enjoyable.

dewalt, Bosch, Makita, and ridgid all make solid, respectable job site style saws. I've used Makita & Dewalt and have zero complaints as I understand the limitations of this style saw.

Whatever you can find the best deal would be my recommendation.....get a decent aftermarket blade and build/ buy a decent stand & outfeed table.

Learn how to safely use a table saw and build a good crosscut sled/ feather boards, zero clearance throat plates

Understand too that most of these saws regardless of mfgr. need a tune-up out of the box.
Blade to fence alignment is nearly never good.....be prepared to invest some minutes to dial it in for a tool that delivers repeatable & accurate cuts.

The dewalt has the best fence of the portable saws. I've also heard of people having problems with the Bosch having too much play in the arbor.

i would just suggest finding a model with an extendable table, or hit up craigslist for a good used contractor style.. i got my delta platinum model with the 36" biesmeyer (spelling?) extension table and fence kit - with a rolling stand in almost new condition for only $250 if you can believe that..

I have more questions than answers.
I have both a portable and Cabinet saws. The difference in what I can and will do with them is night and day. The small portable leave a lot to be desired. I would hate to try and dado or cut something large with it. If I have something non critical and small on a job site the portable works fine for rough cuts.

The answer is it depends.

The intended use of the saw will help us give you more accurate information.

I make some rather small projects. I'm not building cabinets or dressers or anything. I understand those little guys aren't the most accurate and need some set up but based on total amount of usage and space concerns I think something that size would be best for me. As I said previously I have access to a cabinet saw if I need one. This is just for those little jobs where it doesn't make sense to drive 30 minutes away to use a table saw.
