The style shown above works well as long as the tap hasn't "splintered" and broken apart. I've used them with good success unless the tap is broken lengthwise where it wedges itself into the hole. Once that happens all bets are off and the best way I've found is to get the welder out to remove.

If you want to extract a tap that's thoroughly jammed, the only way I find is to break it into pieces. Usually its a 4 flute hand-tap instead of a 2 or 3 flute spiral point tap and that's excellent because its weaker. I find a generic awl thats somewhat sacrificial and sharpen the point like a Tig tungsten. Then off to the tap, time for a heavy hammer and you are not giving it a peck on the cheek. Its time for a HULK SMASH. Usually a couple of iterations back to the grinder, the sharp point helps concentrate forces in the relatively brittle material. Pick out, vacuum, or blow out the pieces and try to figure out what went wrong, are you tapping thru a weldment or a piece of mystery metal with a spot that's as hard as the tap itself? Tap not aligned with the pilot hole? The general idea is to figure out if you can continue to go at it with a fresh tap or its time to think thru another plan.....
