Best tool for cutting landscaping timber

I'm going to be building some planter boxes out of treated landscaping timbers and was wondering what the best tool was for straight and mitered cuts. I believe the timbers measure 5 1/2" square.

Chainsaw if you are handy with one, other wise maybe a handsaw?

A chop/miter saw would make the cleanest/straightest cuts.However you might have to turn the wood for it to cut completely through,depending on what saw you have. Cut slow,wet wood can be a pain in the *** for a saw.

I just saw some guys down the block putting in landscape timbers and they were using that giant Makita circular saw.

I have mitered dozens of landscape timbers with my old Dewalt 12" compound miter saw. The largest stock that I have mitered on the saw is treated 4x6 timbers. This is an older 12" miter saw not a sliding miter saw. I cannot think of a better way to cut landscape timbers.

I usually cut all the way around with a skilsaw, then finish off the ~1" square left in the center with a sharp handsaw.

i been using this cheap piece of china **** 12'' saw for bout 5 years to cut free wood from work for my shop stove almost daily in the cold months, replaced blade 1 time. i think was 130 on sale. ripped that laser off first day. well more like broke it with a chunk of wood. but 5 1/5 in square id just use a chainsaw. dont think the cut depth is 5 1/2 deep on a 12 in saw

I've cut standard landscape timbers with my sliding 10" Harbor Freight miter saw. Worked great. I've never seen 5 1/2" thick landscape timbers. I would probably use a skil saw on something that thick and then flip it over to cut through the other side.

he's trying to cut a 6x6, i just cut all four sides with the circular saw then cut the remainder with a hand saw or sawzall

I have always used a chain saw mark your lines on the top and one side and cut away. If you take your time they come out great and take way less time than marking and cutting on 4 sides with a circular saw and then using a hand saw to finish.

This converts your circular saw into a beam-cutting chainsaw: http://praziusa.com/beamcutter.html. Never used one myself, but it seems like it would be much more precise and controllable than using a chainsaw freehand (which I have done). Not expensive, either.

I would use a Sawzall and/or hand saw. A sharp handsaw will do it just fine.
