Best Toolboxes?

Hi all. Getting ready to begin a garage remodel and have decided to get a "REAL" toolbox. Have been told to get a SnapOn, but wondered what other premium brands were worth looking at. My plan is to get two of the same height (about 38") and width (about 20") and have a "top" built for them to make a work bench that I can pull a chair under.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Here's what the garage basically looks like now:

In my option if you want the most durable check out Lista and Vidmar. Be prepared to spend a bunch of money though.

Have you seen the BMW branded tool box. Its a German made box, not sure who, but a few BMW dealers I saw had them. They were top notch and I'm sure pricey, but with M6s in your garage, it should not be an issue

I really like the LISTA the best so far, but it seems that they only come in Blue. I was wanting to get some sort of Silver color. Maybe they do custom colors?

+1 LOL! I was going to say, those pics seem to be more focused & oriented on the cars rather than the garage!! It's all good, I'd be damn proud of them as well.

Well, actually the garage hasn't been remodeled yet, so there's no reason to show it off just yet. I have always wanted one of "those" garages that really shine! I don't do any mechanical work on my cars, but I do like to detail them. Having a nice garage with a lift and a nice workbench with tool boxes will make it easier for me to do that.

I think you need to get some nicer cars before getting some really nice tool boxes. Just saying, I wouldn't want to have those two junkmobiles in my garage.

Snap-On makes a very good box - but I think everyone knows that. Given your requirements, I don't think you would get any additional function out of a super-heavy-duty box like a Lista. Plus, Snap-On has quite a few off-the-shelf colors and many product lines with even more configurations.

I doubt you or anybody would come to your house and think/say "man, this garage is awesome... except for those Snap-On boxes..."

I like the Snap-On boxes but since I am not really a mechanic...it seems that part of the whole Snap -On thing is the weekly visits to replace broken tools. I think it will end up being between Snap-On and Lista.

I don't have tools to speak of at this time but I plan on starting to amass some tools that are worthy of these boxes. The tools I have now are typical stuff bought at Home Depot type stores. I'm sure that once you get used to a good tool, you never want to go back to a bad one ever again.

An alternate reality in a parallel universe.
I just got off the phone with the local Lista rep. It looks like they will be able to make the cabinets I want in the color I need.

Thanks for the info!

No need to thank me, thank Garage Journal I learned that here. I only have one Lista cabinet which is part of my electronics bench, other than that I suffer through life with Snap On, Matco, MAC, Kennedy, Craftsman and Gerstner roller cabinets.

If you want a roll around box my suggestion is to sell one of the Bimmers and buy one of these. You can then use the other Bimmer to store all your tools and detailing supplies.

Years ago, I worked with a Porsche mechanic that had sheepskin lined drawers in his Snappy box. They remained white for the time that we worked together. I think the guy spent more time washing his tools and his hands than working. I wonder if he is related to Merk?

Actually, you have that backwards. I almost bought one of those but after the test drive, I realized that I wouldn't want anyone I know to see me driving a Porsche, and besides...as cute as that little red car is, it isn't big enough to hold many tools.

Lista is going to be your best bet for size and customization. Snap on does custom but it will be a pretty penny and probably more then Lista. Plus Lista looks cleaner.

Since your not really wrenching you probably don't need the size proportions of a snap on master series or epiq box.

Cute little M6's ya got there can't wait till I throw a turbo kit in my S4, I'd like to find an M6 to run. I have already figured out my stock auto s4 can take a 645 that or the guy just sucked at driving.

The new supercharged V6 s4 should be a bit quicker than a BMW 645, but I'm guessing that if you smoked it in a NON SC s4...he might have been holding a cup of coffee and talking on the phone.

Be careful. The M6 is NOTHING like a 645. My Silver one is basically stock running with 500 HP, but my black one has been "adjusted" a bit and rolls out 610 HP. They turn real good too! ;-)

My buddies father works at Lista. I toured the factory once - Pretty cool stuff. If $ was no issue, I'd buy from them hands down.

Forget Snap On they are a dime a dozen. Go big and get your self a custom color lista or two and put a solid wood top on them!! Your cars will like the company:thumbup:
