AIRCAT 6255 is a nice grinder for the money. Smooth, Good throttle control, greaseable head and good power. You should be able to find it in the $80.00 - $85.00 range

I have the ir max 5" grinder it's very nice but at 35-40 cfm draw it need a lot of air way more than what our 7.5hp 80gal compressor can handle it struggles to keep it moving while grinding. I use it mostly with a wire wheel to clean a prep for metal work

I use Sioux and Cleco straight die grinder and 90 degree very pricey but will out last you . If a bunch of Air force mechanics can't kill them neither can an avg homeowner.

I am looking for a angle grinder with a 5/8" threaded shaft, not a die grinder.

Oh, that is different. I have a long discontinued Sioux made Blue-point that is a geared low RPM model. It has been flawless for 20 years. My backup is a Sioux SWG10AX1245 that I purchased this Summer knowing my Blue-point won't last forever. FYI, in my experience, faster is not better. I'd look for something 11,000 RPM or less and then use a regulator as well

There are a couple good no name ones that they do name and put in a different box. They may be the same as these are not very popular due to he fact it cost so much to run.
It can be ran from a 30$ grinder that uses 1/6 the power and no machine wear and tear.

The cheap air tools ain't worth it IMHO. Throttle valves stick, gearboxes wear out quick, etc

CP and IR are who'd I would go with

I have done this every way you can, this is as good or better than any 4 inch I have ever used. Never had to so much as tighten a screw on one and a couple worked daily for good long time and still feel the same.
Like electric HF has a 9$ grinder, its not the same as the one in the middle can be had under several brands for 30. The 9$ one was worth it, it did wear out but wtf, we ran the snot out of it.
The sander is 70 or 80 now, I am on the second one in a career and it still works although I did replace a bearing in the head, common one I had on the shelf but even if I tossed it the thing has done a lot of real work. My use has dropped some, it will likely last me till I am done. I would have a 400 $ one still used and half worn out.
The bottom line chear impact of old wasn't very good but I am sure once you are above a threshold they are better now but many brand ones are quite competitive in ratchets and impacts. Some of the less popular tools not so much.

I've considered getting one from St. Louis Pneumatic. Made right in St. Louis. Their stuff is available on Home Depot's website. Not terribly priced. I just haven't pulled the trigger on it yet.

I bought the HF Central Pneumatic and Neiko 30060A angle die grinders and both of those were dead in less than a year. I bought the Aircat 6255 about two and a half years ago and have been happy ever since. I kind of expected garbage from HF (it was an impulse purchase since it was under $10), but the Neiko was a real let-down because of all the good reviews I read about it. The HF actually outlasted the Neiko by several months.

Those are die grinders. I am looking for a angle grinder with a 5/8" threaded shaft, not a die grinder. I need to run the same attachments we do with the electric angle grinders

I have a 5" Dotco like that. It has the 5/8 shaft and uses the standard attachments. Has a side handle. Uses a lot of air, though. Dotco's one of the best, and they support their products.

May I ask why you are set on an air angle grinder? They take gobs of air to keep up under load. I have an ancient sioux that I got used, very cheap. About the only thing i use it for is cutoff wheels and the seldom flap disc.

Your best value would probably be a used industrial brand unit.

As for the roll type throttle, they use a collar type on the back end of the unit, that you twist to turn on. A little more convinent at times than the long paddle/lever type.

I will argue with this. The best value for work is a China clone of a premium unit. By the time the industrial unit comes up for sale on the used market it is already worn out.

If you can find a sioux 1285 used that would be what I would recommend, we use them at work in an industrial setting and they are great. Lots of power and very smooth.

I should have bought another one a long time ago simply for convenience. I have some others and we wore out a couple 10$ hf. My others are industrial IR. They are probably 300 today, were then. Would trade any of them for another new one of these as a going concern.
I don't know how long they would last in direct test but aint no home brew gonna find out. It works the same an cost 30$. I believe it is sold as a Farmhand at TSC but the price was better HD. I do not know if HF carrys it. Might be a CH product and spose even Walmart might. Probably central pneumatic too.
I have no firsthand knowledge of a 5/8 spindle model but suspect they got one using the same right angle in the pic above.
Whats the worst that can happen, a guy wears outa 70$ grinder and has to replace it and the best is it last as long as he needs to use it.
