Lowes can use either color code to mix Valspar or Olympic paint. I have been using the Valspar for a few years and have it done all the time if my wife likes an Olympic color better.

Their "not supposed to" us an Olympic formula in Valspar paint and vice versa, or so the paint reps will tell the employees at the counter. At the end of the day the paint machine doesn't care what can is under the dispenser. Just marketing tactics. :shocking:

Glidden in that order.

X2 on getting a contractor friend (if you can) to use his discount for you on SW or BM.

Purdy brushes.
Cheap rollers (that way I can pitch them instead of cleaning).

We painted our house and had great luck with the new Olympic paints (Olympic One and Icon). Compared to the Valspar stuff, the Olympic went on thicker and gave better one coat coverage. Not to mention the can went farther; We could do a whole room with 10 ft ceilings with one can, whereas it took almost a can and a half to do a same sized room with Valspar.

I like using SW for wall paint and Behr ultra high gloss white for trim. For Primer I usually go with the Behr all in one primer unless I'm doing something really fun like 100 year old plaster.

I'm also partial to the Purdy brushes and cleaning them really well after each use. I agree that they get better over time if you take good care of them.

If you are going to be doing a pile of trim paint, such as doing the entire house, then you may want to invest in a 1qt handy paint pail and liners. It will make your life easier.

I have found that using a wire brush to clean out used brushes works well for me but I haven't found a good way to clean roller covers yet.

I've also started using carbide paint scrapers since they last much longer and don't make nearly the bad noises that the steel ones do. :D

There is nothing more expensive then cheap paint, use a quality paint & the job will go smoother, the quality of the brushes, roller covers & even the roller frame makes a difference, put me in for another vote for Purdy brushes.

I've tried the Sherwin Williams and Glidden along with the Behr. The Behr went on better than either and was cheaper than the Sherwin Williams by a lot. The new Behr Ultra is really good. None of the latex paints are very good for wood work and they are really hard to paint without brush marks. Doors and wood work really need to be sprayed for a great job. The best you can do with a brush is use a little floetrol and put it on really heavy and fast and don't go back on it. Just lay it on and leave it. Dip and lick, dip and lick. The stuff never gets very hard like a real paint.

For primer I always use the Glidden Grabber, which seems to be well regarded along with the Bin Zinser. That stuff, and the Zinser goes off in about 2 seconds. Impossibly hard to work with. Avoiding those products makes the Behr Ultra very appealing.

Just curious -- when did you last try? I got shut down a week or so before Thanksgiving 2013. I was shocked to say the least. Thought maybe it was a Lowe's thing as that was the first time I had used them -- been a loyal HD customer until I changed addresses and Lowe's is far more convenient.

When I had my "critical discussion" (threw a fit :bounce:), this was more or less the same response I got from the manager. Funny (not at the time) part is that he said they could mix a SW color with either brand. It definitely has something to do with multiple manufacturers under the same roof and competing for dollars. Seems like Lowe's could better control the situation.

Anyone know if HD has the same BS marketing policy?

Of course, maybe I will go SW next time. I know guys in the industry but don't like to call in favors on small projects. But I know SW don't care what color they mix. They're just happy to sell the paint -- the way it should be.

About 4 months ago. I picked the type of Valspar paint I wanted, then asked him if he could mix it in an Olympic color. He checked his computer, then said that he could do that one. I did not question it, but he seemed to be checking some technical info, think it was the soft gloss aspect to be sure he had the right combo for the color I picked, then mixed it right up. I have had it done several times. I just checked. The color I had done was Olympic paints color of Sauteed Mushroom and had it done with Valspar soft gloss kitchen and bath acrylic latex.
