Best vice grips?

Back when I was in metal working class our instructor talked about his vice grips. I'm very familiar with the "normal" type which close and tighten with the knob at the back. With his though he was able to adjust the amount of clamping force independent of the throat size. Once the force was set you could clamp them onto any size piece you wanted with equal pressure.

What were these?

No, they didn't look anything like that as far as I can remember. I seem to think they were Channel Lock colors but have been all over their website without finding them.

But is that how those work? If they work like I'm thinking I don't see why I wouldn't want those.

I picked up a pair of these at Sears. I don't have a picture.

I don't really like them that much. If I used the same amount of force all the time it would be OK but the adjustment for clamping force is very touchy and regular vice grips are easier to adjust. Because the adjustment screw is between the grips you have to take them off the piece you are working on to adjust it.

"Vice Grip" is a brand of locking pliers. Think I know what you are referring to. "Lock Jaw" pliers?

[edit] -- just now saw your post JayL. You beat me to it. ;) Not too fond of them myself. For the reasons Ron mentioned.

Yup those are the ones, thanks. I'll have to consider your input on them when I make my purchase, thanks.

Yeah I'm aware that Vise Grip is a brand (I say "band aid" too, not Band-Aid) but that's the best way I know to describe what I was looking for.
