Best way to organize sockets and bits

I wish I could claim credit for the idea.

I watched dozens of videos on YouTube on organizational strategies for tool chest. This one seems the best bang for the buck.

With these rails, I can also customize the socket holders. So my hex key sockets span from ¼” drive up to ½” drive, I can put them all on the same rail. Makes it easier for me to keep up with them.

Since I took this picture, I have added color shrink wrap to the handles to make identification easier for me. Blue is metric, and red is SAE. I also put a driver size label on the handles, and slipped a piece of clear heat shrink over it.

I’m a big fan of labeling my tool chest, so when Mrs or the pet kid is helping me, they can find a tool quickly as well.

That is all well and good, but for me......I was more impressed with the "Binford" tool chest.

Tim Taylor would be proud!

Do any of you guys with the VIM rails have problems with metal shavings or grinding dust sticking to them?

I've got a new box on the way and I am looking for some socket organizers. I was thinking about the Westling Machine trays but after adding up what I need I was shocked at the cost. I like the Westling Machine organizers but the empty odd sizes will drive me nuts and now I'm liking the VIM rails but they will cost me almost as much.

VIM Socket Rails are about the best imo

agreed if you're talking about the magrails

but you have to be able to get past the sticker shock.

i would buy mine all over again if needed

I personally think you should just get the Hansen's. As you get more confident in your abilities you will tackle more tasks and once you have a set of Hansen's full you won't need anymore sockets. You will just want them.

If you plan to work out of your box Hansen's take the cake but if you like socket rails I don't think anybody makes a better one than gearwrench

I'm a socket *****. I want them all: extra shallow, shallow, mid, deep, shallow swivel, deep swivel. With the magrails, I will always have room to grow, they take up minimal space, and they work incredible well. The way I look at it, whatever socket set I buy, I just assume they will be ~$20ish more expensive so I can put them on the rail.

BTW, tooltopia is the cheapest place I've been able to find that sells them. Their shipping is excellent too.

I would need each one of your sets. They are pretty much set specific...and I have found with in a Manufacturers specific set there are variables.

I can put a Craftsman VV series 9/16 3/8 DR Deep in my rack but not a EE series. The EE is too big. Checked it against multiple sockets with the VV and EE codes.
