Hi
I'm buying a house that has a screened in 10 X 20 patio that the previous owner painted the concrete a hideous red color.

My plans are to tile this area but everything I'm reading says don't tile over painted concrete??????

If that is a true statement what is the best way to remove the paint? I would prefer mechanical over strippers.

Grind, blast, etch.....

Etch would probably be my last choice since you'd have to neutralize the etching solution etc. But, all of these methods would leave a nice rough surface to ensure a good attachment for the mastic and tile.

Grinding is the best way to remove the paint. A 7" angle grinder and concrete turbo cup wheel will do the trick. Etching will not remove paint. The solution will just sit there and not do much. It needs to react with the free lime on concrete in order work and the paint will just block it. A chemical paint stripper is what is needed if you were to use a liquid product.

best and easiest probably are two different methods. I'd say grinding is probably the best and most thorough, but depending on how well the surface was prepared hitting it with a 3500 psi pressure sprayer may do the truck and turn out to be the easiest, but cleanup will probably not be fun. (think of tiny paint chips blasted all over and then dust once it dries).

I have a good PW (13hp 4000psi) and a Dewalt 7" angle grinder so I will start with those and see where this goes.

Thanks.

Shea 100% correct. Etching does nothing to a coated floor. A chemical stripper could work but creates a huge mess that could stain your driveway when you pressure wash it.

Grind away, wear a respirator!

Any particular brand of concrete turbo cup wheel to avoid? Or a recommendation for a brand?
