For automotive stuff when you're worried about constantly getting very dirty, standard dickies are the way to go. Comfy, durable, cheap. Not very warm though. If you were more worried about being cold and/or wet, i'd look into something from carhartt.

I've gotten a lot of my gear here:

http://www.unionlabel.com/carhartt-ub01-double-knee-heavy-duck-work-dungare01.html

They no longer carry the Union-made, USA-madeCarhartt double knee, but a couple of pairs last me 2 years each of hard wear. Guy from this site told me that Carhartt was still going to make some stuff in the US, but it was going to be difficult for a store buyer to "specify" USA-made given their new distribution system. Whether this is correct or not, I dunno.

I got one pair of Blackadder. Lighterweight. Touch as hell. And the Bantam weight are great during the summer. I'd like to get the optional knee pads. That'd save wear and tear on the body.

I've seen the Duluth but never bought. Seem tough as nails from the ad and what you guys are saying.

Filson -- I like their gear (though they've gone "import" on some clothes), but too expensive for dirty work (for me anyway).'

One problem is that most skimp on quality fabric. Even Carhartt nowadays. All the good shuttle looms that made the old quality fabric at a slow pace was sold off (a lot of it to the Japanese).

Anyway, like my boots, my work trousers are something I invest in. I like to buy my gear every couple years and then not have to think about it.

Yes, the sizing is accurate. I have the same problem with Dickies (and some Levis), but these things fit fine. I used to think they were on the big side, but I now think a lot of the other brands I've tried are a bit small.

I just got my Duluth catalog the other day and I am going to order a pair of the Fire Hose pants and I think the other is called Ballroom jeans or something like that. They expand in the crotch when you bend and kneel plus some of the longtail "T's" to cover the plumbers crack. Lol!!!

The Dickies I've bought were pretty dead on. Their shirts are a little big though... I usually wear an XXL, but that burried me, so I swapped them for XL's.

I like Riggs too but they're hard to find in a brick and mortar store.

On line, best source is Gempler's. You all know about Gempler's don't you? If you don't sign up for one of their hard copy catalogs. Lot's of unique tools and other stuff.

Carhart overalls are what I use. Nice and big, they have lots of pockets double knees and last for at lease a couple of years. Get to work and slip them over my traveling clothes. Great in the winter over jeans and a sweat shirt and in the summer over shorts and a t-shirt.

Got a pair of the Duluth trading company firehose pants. Greatest pants i've ever worn. Comfortable, durable, great pockets, not too slim in the leg (I have big thighs). A+++ from me.

I also got my dickies. The duluths that are the same size as the dickies run a hair smaller. It's a good thing since the dickies are a bit big on me. The duluth's fit pretty dead on.

The dickies I got were both "Loose fit". One was loose straight jeans, one was loose carpenter. Both are excellent, but a hair big/long in the 38-32 size I got. I might just dry them on high or something. They're not too bad being a little big.

Due to the obvious copyright issues, Snickers are sold (if you can find them) as Skillers in the US. I have their work vest and beat the everloving **** out of it. It's got a lot of caulk and putty on it but still works just great! Much more comfortable than a tool belt. Great great products but hard to find in Chicago.

I haven't seen them mentioned yet but we use the Red Kap brand at work, and they're just comfortable, last a whille, 3yrs later still have the same 10pr. I do want to try those Duluth pants though for home use.

Not sure how much cold maters to you, but I switched over to flannel lined jeans for colder weather, and IMO they are better than ordinary jeans and thermal underwear. I haven't had to use any thermals down below when hunting for the past 3-4 years, and that has included trips where it snowed. Not so good wet, but good rain gear solves that issue

I buy my jeans at second hand stores. For $3 to $5 dollars I buy Levis jeans wear them out and buy more . About a year ago I bought three pairs of Carharts pants and I must say that I do like them, especially the flannel lined ones.I also bought a coat and I really like it a lot. I found a brand new Carhart coat at Goodwill for $25 ,so I bought it and am quite pleased with it. By the way, the Carharts are sold by a lady who operates out of her house. I call her with my size and she comes over with a big selection, and I bought them. I used this opportunity to cherry pick out some ,Made in America, old stock. My next jeans will be USA made Wild *** ,and Texas Jeans.

I buy jeans at walmart for $10/pair and when they show stains or start to wear even a little I throw them out and grab a new pair. Do the hold up a long time? No. But I usually have a fresh pair once a month or so. And for $10/pair, they are disposable IMO

Hence the reason our landfills are filling up.

Why not just buy a pair of pants that lasts. If they last 5 times as long, who cares if they're 3 times as much?

I guess i'm just a buy things once type of guy.

I'm guessing you're a pretty big guy if the cheapo pants lack of comfort don't annoy you.

I agree. Things like shoes and pants are not something to cheap out on. Look better, last longer, much more comfortable.

I wear Carharts for work jeans, not at work but for working at home. I wear Horace Smalls (The Force) at work as I need uniform pants. I'd much rather wear jeans at work, but I don't think it's going to happen.

I like thew way Carharts fit, wear and for about $32 a pair, a good value.

i wear dickies double knee work pants and love them. I lug a tool bag around all day and crawl in attics and subfloors too and they do a great job. Carhart makes a good pair of pants as well but i think the dickies are a little more comfortable. i get them online for about 22 bucks a pair. I don't wear jeans at all, just don't like the way they feel.

Not sure if you guys get them, but Snickers do awesome work trousers

Extra flappy pockets for holding tools, spares, consumables without interfering with your normal pockets, VERY hard wearing, light(ish), comfortable and warm too.

Over here they retail at about £80 ($110 ish) but the slide in knee pads have saved my joints sooooo much pain I reckon they have paid for themselves 10 times over. I have 2 pairs which have been worn pretty much every day of work for the last 3.5 years and only signs of wear are the burn holes from welding.

I have the Snickers jeans, they still have the cordura knee pockets and all the cargo/tool pockets.

Best denim jeans ever.

The Duluth Fire Hose pants are hard to beat. As a surveyor, beating through the brush or working on a construction job, the pants take a real pounding but these have held up well. Lots of pockets, too. Sizing is accurate but there was some shrinkage after washing and drying.

Carhartt double front duck for living and banging through life.

Dickies loose fit double knee work pants for wrenching and my job as a mechanic. Carhartts are to hot and the dickies knees hold up better to the kneeling if you can believe that. The navy blue dickies hide oil and stains the best too.

I have the duluth firehose pants as well, they need less pockets. I kill the knees in them quick though and they turn ugly with oil stains real quick in my world.

I like Carhartt for durability and look. If you are looking for value, Lees are great. When back to school sales hit, they are dirt cheap.

Couple more to add to the pile:

Arborwear - made for climbing trees. Very tough, very comfy. I have a pair of the "Original" canvas pants that are holding up like iron. The blue jeans aren't quite as durable, but they've far exceeded my expectations.

No idea where they're made, so I'm guessing they're not made in the US.

Diamond Gusset - I have two pairs of the "Defender" kevlar-lined jeans for motorcycling. US-made, extremely comfy, and the denim (aside from the kevlar liner) is incredibly tough and thick, yet it's comfortable and not stiff.

If you don't need the abrasion protection, their standard jeans should do ya just fine. Read the sizing page and measure as instructed -- it's spot-on.

One thing I've noticed is that my Diamond Gusset jeans somehow seem to clean up easier than other jeans -- I've had some nasty oil and grease stains that come right out with a little pre-treatment.

I have bought Car hart's and Dickinson and been sorely disappointed so I just buy whatever jeans are on clearance anymore.

I was disappointed with Carhart jeans. They were regular cut, ride low and I was really annoyed that the zipper they use is about 1" shorter than any other jeans I have (Levi, Duluth Trading, Cabelas).

I've been wearing Duluth Trading Fire Hose jeans for 3-4 years. IMO, they've got the best pockets on the planet! The pockets are deep and made of the same material as the pants, unlike many other companies that are cheaping out on pocket material. I hate thin pockets where your pen pokes through in a few wearings! What I don't like about the Duluth Trading Fire Hose jeans is they are imported (what isn't anymore?), the colors fade quickly despite washing on gentle and turning them inside out to wash and the beaver proof thing is a farce! I was bit several times by a dog and his teeth went right though, still I was happy I wasn't wearing Dockers!

I purchase the Duluth Trading jeans around Christmas when they have them on sale and offer free shipping (with a certain purchase amount). I will be taking advantage of the lifetime guarantee!
