So my BIL wants a wrench set for xmas and we're keeping all gifts to <$50 a person this year (newborn arriving in 3 days). In his words, "that's a cheap gift". In my mind, its not.

So, knowing my choice will reflect greatly on me when they break, what's the best wrenches to get for <$50.

Oh, and he wants a metric AND standard set.... :wtf:

$50 for both Metric and SAE might be a bit difficult... CMan raised panels maybe? Not sure how big of a set he wants of each?

I have an import Stanley set that I got for about $30 at Wally World a few years ago. 23 pieces I believe, standard and metric. They've got surface rust, but I haven't broken one.

give him a nice card with a $50 bill stuffed in it and let him buy his own wrenches ... he'll find out rather quickly that $50 doesn't buy much when it comes to quality tools.

Is he a pro? DIYer?
If the latter, I'd go with the Craftsman Raised panels. Sears has 8 piece sets on sale this weekend for $10 each, $15 for 9 pieces. Still made in the USA. Probably larger sets, too, under $50.

How on earth could a pro not have a set of wrenches, no less think $50 is gonna buy a pro quality set of wrenches? :dunno:

Do you have a Harbor Freight nearby?

I'm putting together a set of tools to carry in the back of my truck. This truck sets outside overnight where I work, and theft is a real possibility.

I have a fairly complete set of Craftsman tools in a rollaway in the garage, many of which I've owned for 30+ years. Didn't want to risk any of my "good" tools to theft/loss.

I have a Harbor Freight store about a five minute drive from my house that opened two years ago (in a former TSC store, no less). Perusing through their offerings, I figured I could outfit my truck for less than $100.

I bought the first of the set about a week ago. Two polished wrench sets, both 14 pieces, one SAE from 3/8" to 1 1/4", and one metric from 8 mm to 24 mm. They also offer 16 piece sets in raised panel for the same money.

Each was $24.99; I had 20% off coupons I used on each that brought the price down to $19.99 + tax.

They look good enough to do what I'll need them to do; keep in mind I'm not a pro and they won't see extremely heavy use (maybe once or twice a week in summer). Only thing I don't like about them is the cheapo plastic rollup cases they came in; I predict they won't last the summer.

Don't ever pay full price for anything at HF; either it'll be on sale next week, or use a 20% off coupon, they're all over the place.

BTW, I also scored a 17 piece 1/2" drive socket set that was on "store clearance" for $15 bucks, looks like a great deal, guess time will tell.

Your best bet is the HF high polish long pattern wrenches. Sure they are chinese and the surface is a bit rippley but they work and fit fine (at least the metric set in my truck does)

The northern wrenches are much better then the harbor freights. I like them alot.
They are made overseas by danaher/Easco and have the "Surface drive" box ends like the gearwrench.
They come in many sizes so he can grow the set latter on.

Here is a GREAT deal, you can get metric/SAE and stubby's for $39.99 http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200327233_200327233

BTW check out the reviews.

I would agree, the craftsman raised panels or the northern, the cman raised panels would be my best bet for ease of warranty (though Ive never actually broke one legitimately, always broke them doubling them up)

Here's what I have bought (for myself and to give as gifts)..........

Maximum set of 32 pce 1/4 through 1 1/8" and metric 6 to 24 mm for about $30 on sale. (that was a year ago)

http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/brow...2BWrench%2BSet%252C%2B30-Pcs.jsp#BVRRWidgetID

HD Husky sets...........14 pce 5/16" to 11/16" and metric equiv. $10. and a 20 pce set 1/4 to 7/8" and metric for $15.

If we can that here, you should be able to find quality stuff there for similar prices. Didn't include a HD ref. as these are non catalogued specials, but do turn up regularly if you watch the fliers.

Awesome deal for $10 IMO. Then buy him $40 more in stuff, he'd think you went way overboard!! This is how my wife shops, she gets people a lot of stuff for cheap.

My wife would have a field day with this post,I can hear her now:
"woody I just bought you the dog bone tool for $19.99 (not sure of the price),why not throw away all your old rusty tools and why look I even have enough cash left over".
"Just wait you will thank me tons of wrenches in one nice hand tool and all for under $20.00 dollars"...:)

I can't believe what cheap bunch we have here. Buy him one Snapon combo wrench (if they make one less than $50) and include a note, do right by my sister and in 40 more years you will have a full set.

Seriously, if the BIL has no combo wrenches, maybe he has no tools, or close to none, so any tool gift needs to include storage and consider how much space they have. What might be the best choice are one of the complete toolsets that HF and others sell for less than $50 that includes a toolbox and all the basics for home owner type stuff.

Do you have a Menards or FleetFarm nearby? Get the Allen sets in both standard and metric. They are not huge sets, but will keep you around the 50 dollar mark. Great wrenches too.

I'm naturally a ***** by nature. Guess that's what I am since I'm German heritage. Anyway this is what I give3 him. Chocolate wrenches

http://www.creativechocolatesofvt.com/Products/construction_choc.php3#WrenchSet

Kmart has them too on sale. 3 piece chocolate craftsmen wrench set
7.99

That's hilarious.

I've had good success with the craftsman raised panel wrenches. I know you'll get mixed reviews here, but if you're constrained to get something under $50, you could do worse.
These two sets leave a little to be desired but they'll do alright. I'd be happy to get 'em for Christmas anyway.

Alot of good suggestions here. I have a mm and sae set of Stanley wrenches that my mom got me many years ago and they look and feel very good. Are they SO quality? No not by any means but for a weekend wrencher/diy'r they work great.
