Am I the only one who tries to read chammyman's posts to myself in a Scottish accent, with failed results because I don't really know how to speak in a Scottish accent?

I think of him as sounding like Rab C. Nesbit - if you had that show in the States you'd need subtitles :)

lol I don't sound like the Wee Man, I live only a few miles where it was all filmed along with Rab C as well.

To answer someone elses question I am a proper mechanic just got let go because they can employ foreign (Polish) workers for less and get a grant for taking them on. Its happening everywhere in the UK.

I will get some pics of some beta stuff later on.

Frank woodchip is horrible yet the staple wall covering of ex council houses everywhere!

Ralph, union wages? Must be some american thing. I was making quite a bit, doubling my wages with homers after hours as well sometimes. But now its less atable the trips to Amerone etc have stopped. Not used a stahlwille torque wrench, always snap on, beta, clarke, draper, halfords pro or britool ones. From 3/8 - 3/4 drive

There is a shortage of mechanics in Canada, Alberta and British Columbia in particular. If you arrive on Monday there is a good chance you will have a job by Tuesday. Money is good too. You will be able to afford all the Beta and Stahlwille tools you want!

While bchee is doing a google search for Beta tool pics, you could be doing a search for jobs in Canada. It is entirely possible that you could find an employer that would pay your expenses to get here. However, the location might be off in the bush somewhere. You don't mind grizzly bears breaking into your house, do you?

Love those Beta Screwdrivers. Been drooling over them on Amazon. It looks like some GJ members have a store front to shop Beta products. Any clue as to where to find a list of places to shop for these at? Not real crazy about buying off Amazon but I will if I have to.

I bought a Beta torque wrench about twelve years ago with a supposed lifetime warranty. Within 18 months, the ratchet mechanism broke and I gave it to the local rep to get it replaced. He disappeared without trace, along with my ratchet end. Over the next ten years, I tried with each successive Beta rep to get the ratchet end returned if not replaced. I discovered recently that a parts supplier that my employer deals with were agents for Beta tools; Bingo!!......Er.....Not! I sent in the wrench to this firm for repair. Their first response was "Where's the receipt?" I said it didn't matter as it was a lifetime warranty. The current Beta rep, Brian East, visited them, took one look at my wrench and said it was obsolete and there was nothing he could do. That was the first lie. The firm sent me back the wrench telling me that because I didn't buy it from them, I needed to deal with Beta directly, giving me East's phone number and not telling me what he'd said to them. So I phone Brian East directly and he tells me that there is a new range of torque wrenches coming out in May and he's be in touch. That was lie number two. I contacted him near the end of May and he informed me that it would now be June. Lie number three. Same thing again but now July. Lie number four. I phoned Beta directly and spoke to one girl, explained what had happened and that I didn't want to deal with Brian East as he'd lied to me four times. She promised to phone back and didn't. I phone Beta back a week later and speak to another girl and go through the whole story again and get promised a return phone call. Two days later, I get an aggressive call from Brian East, whinging about me complaining to Beta and that I was making life difficult for him, blah, blah, blah. He then told me that a new range of torque wrenches were coming out this month and he would bring me one but I would have to pay something towards it. Lie number five. I then visit a tool company that my son works for and look at the new Beta wrench that superseded mine. I looked at the ratchet head and said it was the same as mine so order one up and I'll pay for it myself. My son sends the wrench to Beta and said it should be repaired under warranty. They agreed to repair it but there was a £70 calibration free and wouldn't release it until the money was paid upfront. I got my son to get the wrench back un-repaired and I've just bought a new ratchet end from Midland Tools, UK for £24 and will repair it myself. my experience of Beta is poor and off-putting. Their rep is a liar and a con man and the two girls who deal with calls are useless and spineless. The majority of my tools are Snap-On and a few are Facom. I now would never buy anything else.

I had never heard of Beta before until several years ago when a Beta tool truck showed up at work in an old converted Mac tools truck.

What a joke. I have never handled more awkward, crude and uncomfortable hand tools in my life. The power tools were just laughable. Looked like a traveling motel tool sale vomited inside a bread truck. They even opened a companion retail store in the area.

Nobody in our shop of 25+ mechanics bought a single item and they folded up after a few months.

I use Beta tools every day, 75-85% of my tools are Beta and having had Snap On in the past there's no way I would go back to them. They are very high quality, I get a good deal from my supplier. I have a big range, wrenches, screw drivers, tool boxes, torque wrenches, sockets, ratchets. They have never let me down, converted a few other techs over to Beta as well, all of them more than happy with the tools.
