I've been hanging around for a while and love the projects and information on GJ. Saw a post this morning asking for information that I thought I could help with so I waded in. Since I hadn't done an intro, I figured I better get it done - though you guys don't seem quite as harsh as some other boards. Sorry for the breach in etiquette but here goes.

I've lived most of my life in the snowy Northeast. I'm in the concrete business. We're not a huge business - 50 to 100 employees. Actually the numbers should be 100 to 50 because that is the direction we have gone in recent years. WE do mostly heavy commercial/industrial projects.

My major hobby is hot rodding. I've had a bunch of cars over the years - my current project is a steel Willys coupe. Whether its in the shop or house I usually do most everything myself - although I've avoided drywall whenever possible.

We'll be starting construction of a modern all concrete house in a year or so including my dream shop. I'll repay the favor and post some build pics for you guys.

I agree. This forum seems more like the discussion that we have in my garage when we are talking about things in general. Someone may be putting up a new building, someone else miight talk about his wife...dogs....kids. All in all a great general BS session. And, we might even share something worthwhile....
but not always. H.A.M.B. is much more technically oriented, or was in the beginning. A place to discuss, debate, on topic hot rod and custom subjects.
Both sites have their individual place in my (our) life (lives).

Check out my homepage on the HAMB, I'm LLWillysfan there too I put a few pictures from the day I brought it home.

Haven't done a lot since then - been getting the shop set up. I've got a 371 Olds on order and just bought another one for mock up. Hoping to get going in earnest in the next month or so.

Both boards are fantastic. Am planning to do a build thread for the Willys over there and my next shop on GJ. Figure I should do something to contribute considering how much I have benefitted.

Thanks Call me the Breeze. I'm all the way up in Maine. Spring is just starting to show itself - can't happen soon enough for me.

Ya gotta love an old Willys. This is the second one I've owned. Sold the first one before I even got started due to family, business, etc. Won't make that mistake again.

I sure will. It will be a little while before we get going but I think folks on here will get a kick out of it.

We bought 25 acres on the Kennebec River here in Maine several years ago. We built a 2000 foot road, brought in underground power and have the building site prepped.

Plans are for an all concrete home with attached garage and shop. The walls, floors and roof are ICF with a lot of exposed architectural concrete including the fireplace/chimney. It's a modern design with flat roofs, lots of glass, rain screen siding, etc.

I actually have a model the architect did. Maybe I'll post a photo or two as a warm up.

In addition to the garage, I'm thinking the shop will be 28 x 28 but the damn thing keeps growing.

I'm hoping to start contsruction this fall if the finances are in order.

Several Insulating Concrete Form (ICF) mfgs offer a system to do floors and roofs in addition to the wall systems that are pretty common. They are basically foam planks that bear on the exterior walls and/or structural steel. You need to shore under them before you place concrete on top. The planks are 'routed' out to create integral concrete beams. After the concrete reaches strength, you remove the shoring and you have yourself an insulated concrete floor or roof. Depending on your expertise and ability to do the work yourself, it is comparable to traditional wood framing. Google ICF and you'll find some examples. Pretty simple really.

I've checked out some of the ICF on the internet a while back. I do realize it's something new, but it just hasn't taken off in this area yet. Most homes are built with basements here, some with crawlspaces but most use block. Poured walls are still not the norm around here, although my parents used poured walls when they built their home back '79.

As far the roofs, I guess I didn't think about them being very similar to a poured floor in a commerical setting.
