Hello,
I am new to the Garage Journal Board. I found this website while looking for ideas on my current renovation. There are wonderful posts and amazing ideas to ponder over here at the Garage Journal. I can't wait to explore the possibilities.
I've been seeing this note whenever I log in "Why not start with your first post today and become an active part of The Garage Journal Board now!" So here goes.
I bought my home in 2006 when I was single. One of the main reasons for this purchase was the 28x30x10 attached garage. That may not seem large, but by Tampa Florida standards, it's big! I moved into the house over a period of three months. The owner allowed me to put my belongings into the garage before the closing. That was the first problem. The house needed soooooo much work, that it encompassed most of my (free) time. That was the second problem. Like most people, I work (allot), and since 2010 I have been married. We won't (dare) call those things problems, but rather "time consuming blessings". The biggest problem by far is the heat. In Tampa, the weather from June to October is something like this: Low temp-76, High temp-92, Precip-50%, Humidity-73+%. Try it sometime. Your blood dries out from perspiration, and your body goes into super slow motion.
So here I am. Eight years later. I have since added a Laundry room for my new wife because of an unrealistic spider phobia , and moved her belongings into one corner of the garage. It is finally time for the makeover!

This is after the laundry room was built. You can see how the loft was "hacked".

The dividing wall and half loft are demo'd, and the block wall is painted white. What a difference a white wall makes! The unpainted stripe is where the 2x4 will attach with adhesive, and Tapcons.

At this point I've moved the water heater, and dryer vent. I moved the electrical, and plumbing. I have siding on the laundry room wall after two years of bare studs. I have framed the loft, and decked it. I don't know what to do about a door to enclose the loft. I was thinking about a "large hatch" supported by struts that raises up. Similar to luggage compartments on large travel coaches.
Most importantly, I have installed a sophisticated sound system.

The Garage is coming along slowly. Fortunately I still have a Job, but it consumes most of my free time. I have finished the loft, and tirmmed out the door opening. I have also hung shelving on one side of the loft.
The sliding doors ride on patio door rollers and the track is made of brake line nailed to
the 2X6 facia. The track above the door is common electrical strut. The patio door rollers were on clearance at Lowe"s for 75 cents, and they have bearings in the wheel.

What a relief! I finally put the A/C unit in place.:rocker: Maybe I will be able to use my garage now? The cost of the lift was $28 for 1/2 day rental. Bonus: I was planning on renting the lift, and a trailer for the full day at a cost of $86. On the way to the rental store, I passed a Yard-Sale. At the yard sale was a 4X8 flatbed converted boat trailer. The owner only wanted $100 for it! SOLD! I had anticipated spending $86, but for $42 more I ended up with a 4X8 utility trailer to keep.

I am SO glad you got the AC added, it was hard to read your thread with the thought of it being SO HOT!!! I will stick around to see this re-do! One of the reasons I like your garage is the abundance of engines in there! Just my style! What engines are in there?

All of the engines are sb Olds. 350's and 403. I even have a 350 diesel block in there somewhere. That diesel block is about 1/2" thick everywhere! What a monster!

Things have been slow on the Garage Project. My main task is keeping the garage clean so that when I am ready to work, I have room to do something.

Here's what I worked on today!

"How to (almost) make a workbench with $23 worth of materials."

Start with 2 under bed storage units.

Clamp units together, then screw-n-glue.

Re-assemble the pieces you removed earlier, and attach a set of $3 wheels to the bottom of the frame, and you're done.:rocker:

I know what you are thinking...
"It isn't steel!"
"You can't place an engine block on it!"
"It only took an hour to assemble!"

Well, you are correct! But it is just a workbench. This obviously isn't the finished product. Eventually, it will have a nice oak top, and some pull out bins on top of the existing base. I will upload the pictures when it is finished.
I design everything in my garage to be inexpensive, and moveable.

Thanks for the update, your bench idea is very innovative to say the least, well done.

I have similar issues, keeping the shed clean and every thing in its place is a must as it makes for a much nicer work environment in a small space.
Regards

Thank-You 1/2 Cup. I very much enjoyed your pot "belly heater build". What a great way to repurpose a set of brake drums. Very unique and practical.

I just located some used pallet racking for a price that's to good to be true. $150 Total price for 10 uprights and 36 cross beams. He claims they are 15' tall. I am going after work to pick them up. Pictures coming soon, stay tuned.

It turns out that they are 12' and 10' not 15'. I ended up with 5-10'x36" teardrop style uprights (that have been resized from taller units) and 12-9ft cross beams. 5-12'x36" hook type uprights and 33-8ft crossbeams. Not a bad price though. I can probably sell them for something more suitable.

Not much happening lately in the garage. I have been stocking up with woodworking tools so I can build my new workbench.
I found this drawer/table when I went to look at a Craftsman toolbox posted on Craigslist. I left the toolbox behind, and brought home the drawer cabinet. What a MONSTER! 250lbs of American made steel!
By the way, the lower drawers are empty!

Its been a while since I posted last. I have been neglecting the garage, and focusing on distractions. I like yard sales and flea markets, because you can find great old stuff, and meet interesting people. That is where I found these nice parts bins. I love the old metal ones. I spent 4 hours that day sorting hardware that had accumulated on the workbench.
While I was there, I made some brackets for the Level and straightedge my Wife bought for me.

This is why my Garage has been neglected. I have been collecting pallet wood from work. It started with one, and has grown into an obsession. Some of this wood is really nice. Certain pallets I have found are made with exotic woods. After that, I stumbled upon a granite supplier that was disposing of some nice lumber including Pine and Red Oak. Most of my time has been spent removing nails from this stuff. Some of these pallets have 100 or more nails. I have it (nailed) down to 1hr per pallet. Pun intended.

I am distracted by shiny things or dull things that could someday be shiny. I am also distracted by old things with exposed moving parts. I've been buying up woodworking tools so that I can use all of those pallets to make some nice things. This is one of those tools. Its an Atlas benchtop spindle shaper. I removed the rust with electrolysis, then painted it with some Hammerite Rust Cap paint. I've never used this paint before. It is really nasty stuff. I want to spray it, but I do not know what to use for thinner. I'm afraid it will ruin my sprayer, so I brushed it on.... what a mistake.
