Better vise: Reed 204 or Wilton 8400?

I've had had my 4" Reed 204 vise for a few years after I found it in a miscellaneous lot in an auction lot I had won. Well today I just scored a Wilton 4" 8400 vise. So my question is which vise is more sought after/what has a higher re-sale value?

since you own both maybe you'll be able to tell us pretty soon. neither vise is a bad vise to own that is for certain.

i'd prefer the Reed and pretty sure the Wilton would sell for more because of their marketing and name recognition.

keep us posted.

I think the reed is a heavier duty vise but the wilton will always sell for more because of its bullet design that people recognize as a high quality. Its like comparing a super duty pickup truck to Range Rover.

Yeah I had a feeling the wilton would give more. I remember paying 20 bucks for the reed at an auction also came with a ball joint kit and misc hand tools. Paid 65 for the wilton. I seem to only find nice 4" vises hoping to get a 5 or 6" someday .

No experience with the Wilton but I used the 4" Reed at work for 26 years. I could not believe how that 4" dwarfed the 6" I have at home. It also had the Reed brass soft jaws which are a universal style that comes in several sizees. I recommend, them for any vise. I got a good deal on a pair of the similar design Wilton copper jaws in 6" for my home vise. I like the brass better. It is soft enough to protect but not so easily gouged. I would grab a Reed if I saw one that cheap.

I have a Reed 204-1/2 on the shelf but I installed my Wilton 8400 on my new workbench. I don't beat on my vises, and prefer the precision of the Wilton. I recently sold off my Wilton 4-1/2 and 5 inch vises, finding the 4-inch to be a very usable size for most home applications. So I guess I would say to keep your new Wilton.

BTW, the Reed C2 in my Avatar justs sits on my bench at work for decoration

The Reed will take more abuse, the Wilton will fetch a better price.
Keep the Reed, make the Wilton look pretty and cash it in.
