Half a lifetime ago I worked in a small commercial cabinet shop whose bread and butter was laminated cabinetry. I was introduced to this little router very early on.
It is for making tight seams in laminate without spending all day hand filing cabinet faces. The edge on the base acts as a guide along a straight edge you provided on one piece of laminate. Leaving the other piece slightly long, it passes above the base and is trimmed by the bit. If your settings are right and your hand is steady, you can make incredibly tight laminate joints.
I'm not sure if this method is even practical anymore in a production setting. A lot has changed, I'm sure.
