I’m still alive and kicking. Despite the fact it’s winter there hasn’t really been any slow time. I’m actually behind on everything.

Just got done with the freeze like everyone else. No we’ve just had rain every other day. We definitely needed some moisture in the ground. Just not all at once. It’s definitely a mud hole everywhere now. But next week looks like we’ll have some warmer temperatures and maybe even some sun. So we might catch a little drying time.

So I thought I’d share a little more on part of what takes up my time and keeps me from updating things here on Garage Journal.

Some I’m constantly changing things in the enclosed trailer to have a better set up to fit more products for the tool business. So I thought I’d pick the brains of you guys for some ideas.

It’s a mess right now. But here’s the view. I put up some pegboard. Took awhile to cut all the pieces of bungee cord, then use a clip to hold them tight and in place. It definitely helped with storage. I think next step will be adding them to the ceiling.

The lights that are on in the picture are hooked up to an outlet that I can power with an extension cord and plug in the shop. The other lights that are off and 12v lights I have wired to the plug at the truck. So when I’m hooked up and on the road I can turn them on. I also have those same light wired up to work the a Milwaukee M12 battery.

One thing I’m looking to do is add another power source for when I’m on the go or set up with the trailer somewhere and don’t have access to a wall plug. Or don’t want to let me truck sit and run the whole time. I’m in the process of setting up a new point of sale system. So it’d be nice to be able to plug in the receipt printer, laptop, chargers, battery chargers. But I’m not completely sure what to do.

On the other hand. Storage. Some of the wire shelves get a little cluttered. Once I add the bungee pegboards to the ceiling I can free up some of that space and add those tools to the ceiling.

Some of the shelves I feel like it could be helpful to show how take advantage of the sides to allow for more storage as well. But I’m not sure what the best way would be to go about that.

I also want to set up some storage for miscellaneous singles of drill bits, thread taps, and burr bits. Kind of thinking about doing something different for hammers as well.

So any ideas? Let me know.

Just an update on the tool business. It’s definitely grown, sales are up, more customers, it’s supporting itself.

I currently deal with Macnaught, Wera, Wilde, Cle-Line, Viking, Mastercut, Atlas46, Ernst Manufacturing, Vaughan, Pipe Vise, Gedore, Trusty-Cook, Enderes, and Tekton all directly. Then I also have a couple wholesale companies I work with to sell Milwaukee, Lang, Lisle, Gearwrench, Grey Pnuematic, Sunex, Knipex, Vim, Mayhew, CTA, Thexton, OTC, Rite In The Rain, and a lot more. But those are the basic brands I tend to stick with.

I’m trying to keep more and more in stock all the time. Try adding new thing and keeping more on hand.

That’s at least a touch of it. As mentioned I’m trying to set up a point of sales system to make sales faster and easier. Hopefully with in the next month or so I’ll have all items barcoded, and price. I’ll be able to keep a better inventory of everything. Print receipts on the spot. And easily barcode scan items in on a sales invoice to make things quick. Not to mention save myself the time of looking up prices on items constantly. I’m also hoping to be able to add in prices of several nonstocked items as well so easily look up prices.

Its great your tooling sales are going well!
Are you thinking of adding a generator for another power source?
I wouldn't think it needs too big, we have one this is about the size of a small carry on.
I was kind of considering a small generator rather than just hooking up a large 12v battery and a trickle charger for it.

What kind of generator do you have?

My buddy used a honda eu2000 to power his boat since it didnt have an onboard genset and it ran everything including ac. He later ypgraded to using a Jackery which is just a big battery you can recharge with solar, 110v or 12 v dc. It will work all weekend for him on a single charge. . Should have no problem running your tool truck. Plus its something you could potentially sell.

Are they pretty quiet? That’s one concern I had.

This is the one we have, and it's been spot on when needed.
As far as the noise goes, not sure how to quantify the level of noise. We use ours to assure a couple of sump pumps keep running.
I can hear it change sound when it's baring down when one of the pumps goes off. It's about 10 feet away from our bedroom window and we can't hear it when it's not under load.

I have this little harbor freight 1400w generator for my small camper- it will run all the lights, chargers, and even the small wall mounted AC in the camper for around 8 hours on a tank of fuel, which I believe is around a half gallon. And it is quiet enough that it can be running on the back side of my camper, in the idle down mode (just lights and chargers) and you can sit out under the awning and have a normal conversation, barely noticing the generator in the background.

So what size would you guys recommend to run some lights, receipt printer and maybe just charge the iPad or cordless battery once in awhile?

A jackery or bluetti portable battery pack. Super common in the van/over landing space. Charge off a 12v plug in the van, or plug into 110 in the house when needed. No gas can required.

Hey everybody!
Hey !!!!

Yet another plug for a Honda inverter. Bonkers quiet and quite fuel efficient. Plus you can use it for a ton of other things.

The battery generators look interesting as well. Do you park the trailer in a shed or leave it outside when not in use ? If outside you may be able to put some solar panels on top that would feed the battery generator to keep it charged when you’re not using the trailer.

I have been looking at the Jackery pretty close. Just trying to figure out how big I need to go. Might have to check out the Bluetti too.

The boss has been thinking about actually getting a Honda recently too. But now seeing some of these battery options I think it’d be ideal for my set up. I do typically try to keep the trailer in the shed when I’m not pulling it. But I did like the option of the solar panel charge too.

I’m going to try to figure out how much power I think I’d need at maximum and maybe just purchase a battery generated now. Then maybe add the panel.

With the Jackery I know my buddies 27ft boat will run all weekend doing music amps, lights, and ac on the 1000 wh model. They are pretty impressive and dont drain like I thought that they would. We used it for a 3 day camping trip to power fans and charge phones and it didnt make a dent in the power storage at all. For daily use on the trailer with you having 12v dc a smaller model could work since it can recharge while you drive to the next stop. Add up all your power consumers and I bet the watt hours arent as much as you think.

That’s good to know. I’m trying to get an idea of what I need now and may possibly need in the near future. It’d be great to have a larger size. But I intend to use this strictly just for this trailer. So I’m hoping I can get by with one of the smaller sizes as well. Maybe get by with only spending about $500 or so. I do like the idea of the Jackery set-up.

Well. I know it’s been awhile again. Busy, busy, busy. The day is over before I know it and it’ll be after midnight. Just when a Monday hits and I think I’m going to get something done for the week it’s quickly turns into Friday or Saturday and I feel I’ve accomplished nothing.

Things are a constant with the tool business and things are really kicking off again on the farm. Not that they really slowed down. But it’s busier and about to get even busier yet.

It’s warm, it’s dry, I feel like any sort of schedule is out the window. It’s still plenty early but there’s lots to do and lots to catch up on.

So one thing i wanted to ask an opinion on is storage for my tool sales trailer. I’ve been keeping a variety of single, miscellaneous sockets in stock.
IMG_6782.jpeg
Awhile back and made this strip with pegs on it. It works good for the larger sockets. However, I didn’t space things right for smaller sockets. Not to mention the 3/8” and 1/4” rods were quite made right and the sockets don’t actually fit on them.
IMG_6783.jpeg
I also keep some hanging from a few Ernst rails. They honestly hold really well. There’s only been one or two fall off. But depending on where I got things can get really bounced around, especially when I go across the river. It’s ok and it does show off how well Ernst socket holders work. But it’s not quite practical for as much as I keep in stock.
IMG_6784.jpegSome Wera and Vim sets already come stored on magnetic rails. Which I can confidently say the Vim and Wera rails never move. They’re solid. They don’t go anywhere. I don’t mind storing there as they are sets anyways. Plus, again. Kind of lets the product speak for itself.

But I’d like to find a magnetic option for all the sockets to replace the pegs I put along the top of the shelf. I feel like it’d help me save on space. Plus, allow me to easily place any sockets, anywhere, especially since the 3/8 and 1/4 drive sockets I have don’t have a good spot right now. I just haven’t been able to find much in a narrow option, especially that’s cost effective.

Also, I’ve got some battery operated LED light strips I plan to add behind the row of sockets along the top, help draw attention to them more. I’ve had a number of customers state they haven’t even noticed I have them. Or at least it took them awhile to notice.

So any ideas? I can’t find any strong enough magnetic tool holders. Not really any magnetic strips that would be a good size. Vim rails would be cool. But they’re not cheap either. To do the whole stretch of the top of the shelf would be expensive. I wanted to do Ernst rails at one time and just screw them down to the shelf. But I’d have to keep a large supply of the small pegs on hand just for myself. I tried to look for magnetic strips from McMaster Carr, but I’m not sure how larger I’d need. I need something from enough to hold a 3/4” drive 46mm impact socket while it’s bouncing down the road. But I don’t want to spend a ton either. I don’t think just any old roll of adhesive magnetic strip would work either.

For your application, I’d consider using the magnetic tool holders from Harbor Freight. I’ve used several different socket holders and haven’t found a perfect solution. The spacing is tough and the cost can get high.

I’ve tested some similar solutions. They’re not strong enough of magnets to hold the likes of m 3/4” drive impact sockets when you’re bouncing up and down the highway. I need something pretty strong.

If it was not for this thread, I would have no idea John Deere sold a planter like that! Are there many around you?

Martin
I know there are a few across the river. A guy here just bought one similar this year. But I don’t think it has the liquid set up on it.

But if I’m being honest. I do not care for this planter at all. It’s too heavy. We already dumped several thousand in it to replace worn out parts and it’s only 3 years old. Everything is a pain to work on. I hate the boxes. I wanted vacuum meters, but I didn’t win that argument. The liquid system needs to have a monitoring system adding to it. I don’t care for the planter monitor system. I just don’t care for the setup on it.

The one pro is the pneumatic down pressure. I know that it’s out dated now and they have all the charts and diagrams that say how much better hydraulic down pressure is. But pneumatic is still way better than the old springs.

When we bought it the salesmen for the dealer said Deere was calling in the “Kinze Killer”. But it definitely is not.

They have a twelve row 30” version available in South America. All it takes is adding rows on the end. But for some reason it’s not available in the states.

Actually several years ago the dealer brought some guys from Deere to the shop to talk about this style planter. They had a few demo’s they were using in different parts of the country and also had a few different variations of it they were testing. We even had to sign a non disclosure because it was still in development. They said, they wanted to get farmers opinions on what they wanted and what they liked about the Kinze. But that quickly turned into, this is what we’re doing and it’s better. It was more of a showing off what the thought they did better rather than getting feedback on what the farmer liked or disliked.

It seems like planter types are regional. Everyone in our area has flex folds. No one flood irrigates or cultivates around here. Two hours Southwest of here, where my wife is from, everyone has mounted planters. They still cultivate some down there, because it is flat, and they use to flood irrigate everything. They now mostly have pivot irrigation, but they strip till a lot down there.

My father in law's neighbor does custom mounted planter.

They run bigger tractors on their planter than they do on their grain carts down there!

Those kinze lift and spins are fairly popular around here. I was at a guys place yesterday actually and looked at his new to him 8/15 row Kinze. He's excited to get it into the field, should cover more ground than an 8 row and be a lot narrower on the road.

I've only seen one of those style Deere planters that cliftonbros9 has around here.

I'm surprised there's no lift assist on that rig. That's a pile of weight on the back of that tractor with full seed tanks.

Wow, we have a long ways to go in Northern IL.
It’s been so dry here things are just drying up. I know a few guys that already finished with corn. Guys that are starting on beans. There’s still a little green left in the leaves on the stalks. But by evening moisture is down as low as 14%. Highest I’ve seen on a truck load that I’ve tested has been 17.6%.

Just about an hour south of us they’d started almost a month ago. But they’ve been fairly dry do there as well.
